MATH

We are wrapping up our Multiplication Unit this week! Due to NWEA testing, we have to push back our Multiplication Unit Test to later this week. Please continue to practice multiplication facts and go over the test review packet with your child. We will be going into division next. Students have been working with multiplication and division fact families in the multiplication unit so this should make the division unit quick and easy!

WRITING

We have been focusing on informational writing in class. It has been fun helping the students research their chosen topics. For this paper they had to chose a Michigan historical landmark to write about. This has led to great discussions as we work through the writing process.

READING

During December we completed an author study on Patricia Pollacco. Patricia is a Michigan author and her books cover many aspects of daily life through which your children will recognize their own relationships in their families and communities. Her stories also deal with multicultural situations as well as multigenerational settings. We can honestly say that our students hung on every word that we read.

In January we will be reading a story called Messaging Mania. Messaging Mania is an expository text that has been written to inform us about the problems of using instant messaging. Our next story will be called What do Illustrators Do? this is another expository piece on how two authors use their own ideas to write the same story.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Michigan History! We have started learning about the history of our great state of Michigan. We have begun with the Native Americans. Larry Denemy, the Native American liaison at our school, came in and shared his Native American knowledge. We have continued learning in class about the Three Fires, and gifts that we still enjoy from the Native Americans: legends, food and crops, inventions, and many names in Michigan. We are now going to learn about many changes that took place as the French started coming to Michigan.

Reminders for this week:

  • Your child's bookshare has been scheduled, be sure to be prepared and ready on their scheduled day.
  • January calendars will be due February 1st!
  • Homework is handed out on Fridays and due back every Wednesday.
