WEEKLY NEWSLETTER November 7, 2016
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
I'm delighted to say that we've had yet another incredible week at Fulton Science Academy Private School!
Congratulations to our wonderful students, faculty, and parents for winning a 2016 Georgia STEM Education Award for best Middle School, as well as the many other academic awards this past week. Simply amazing!
I can’t help but wonder if other principals are spending this much time announcing the achievements of their students. Such a joy and privilege!
The achievements that we have already seen in our fifth year as a private school tell me that the future is only brighter for our school and its students. Together, we are building the school of the future, today.
Please enjoy details about our recent achievements throughout this issue of our school newsletter, which we have now organized into sections for your viewing pleasure.
NATIONAL GIFTED CONFERENCE & ACCREDITATION CONFERENCE
I have spent the past week attending the National Association of Gifted Children’s Annual Conference as well as the Annual Accreditation Conference. Conferences such as these allow attendees to network with great educators from all over the nation. Together, we discuss best practices to move education to the next level.
I am happy to say that I have learned so much through these conferences, been inspired by some great educators, and I am looking forward to applying some of the ideas that were shared here at our own school.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
Kenan Sener
Principal

FSAPS to Participate in #GivingTuesday on 11/29/16 - $100,000 Fundraising Goal Established to Support the Mustang Fund
Fulton Science Academy has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
Occurring this year on Tuesday, November 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
This year's #GivingTuesday event will serve as the official launch of FSA's Annual Fundraising Campaign, which this year has a goal of raising $100,000 between now and December 31, 2016. All gifts to Fulton Science Academy are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
Details about #GivingTuesday and the annual fundraising drive will be forthcoming as the event date approaches. Questions and comments about this important schoolwide initiative can be directed to Megan Bowman, Director of Institutional Advancement, mbowman@fultonscienceacademy.org. Thank you!

4. No weapons or props of any kind, including toys.
5. Students must have their character approved by their language arts teacher.
PLEASE SIGN-UP NOW FOR VARIETY SHOW AUDITIONS!
Back by popular demand, Fulton Science Academy is once again looking forward to a Variety Show. This annual event provides students with a fun and enjoyable opportunity to showcase their talents to fellow students and peers.
Any student interested in participating must first audition. We ask that interested participants please choose an audition time slot below using this group signup form. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first served basis.

Please note: if you miss your audition, you will forfeit your opportunity to perform. We apologize in advance, but auditions cannot be rescheduled and there are no do-overs. We have many people who wish to participate, and there is only space for a limited number of acts per show. Updates from the Mustang Support Organization
Parent Seminar
Does your teen have the organization, time management & planning skills that are necessary to succeed in middle school, high school, college & beyond?
Does your child…
- Procrastinate on important projects?
- Lose track of time or forget deadlines?
- Have difficulty maintaining focus and motivation?
- Have trouble staying organized?
This may be a sign that your student has poorly developed executive skills. Students’ executive skills can have a major impact on their performance in high school, college, and beyond. However, it can be very difficult for students to change these behaviors on their own, and most schools provide little guidance in how to develop these critical life skills.
Parents, please join us on November 15 at 6 pm for a presentation by Dr. Maggie Wray, Ph.D.
Dr. Wray will give ideas, tips, and tools families can use at home to improve their kids' ability to manage time effectively, stay organized, and balance their busy schedule of challenging classes and demanding extracurricular activities.

High School Finals schedule
Middle School students who are taking high school classes will take the same finals at the time(s) listed below, but will remain in school following their usual schedule.
Club Updates...
Elementary Service Learning Reaches Out!
Students in the Elementary Service Learning Club have been busy planning and promoting the "Blessings In A Backpack" Fundraiser.
In the recent weeks, students have learned about and discussed how food insecurity can play a big role in the ability to concentrate and perform in school. To support other students who may not have enough food to eat, service learning wrote letters to include in the "Blessings in a Backpack" food bags.
These letters included words of encouragement and support, and letting the student know that they always had a friend at FSA.
Saba F and Akshu T are two students who added some additional touches to her letter! Keep donating to our "Blessings in a Backpack" fundraiser so we can help feed as many kids as possible. Thank you for your support!
Trivia Fun!
In the coming weeks, students will learn about the history of Veteran's Day, the tradition of Thanksgiving, and former presidents of the United States of America.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for this club, please feel free to email them to Ms. Ramsey at cramsey@fultonsciecnceacademy.org.

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
