Online Scaffolding

What is online scaffolding?

It is "a variety of instructional techniques used to move students progressively toward stronger understanding and, ultimately, greater independence in the learning physical scaffolding, the supportive strategies are incrementally removed when they are no longer needed, and the teacher gradually shifts more responsibility over the learning process to the student" (Great Schools Partnership)

Simple Structure for Scaffolded Instruction

  1. Instructor models a new or difficult task

  2. The learner(s) follow along or imitate the instructor modeling the task again

  3. The learner(s) work together to complete a new, similar task

  4. The learner(s) complete another similar, but new task on their own

(Fisher & Frey, 2008, p.4) as cited in (Larkin, 2002)
