Dear J. Houston Families,

I’m blessed to be part of an incredible school community and family. I want to wish everyone a wonderful, restful, and relaxing winter break. We are a diverse, unique, and poised school community who are also intelligent, resourceful, resilient, passionate, creative, and supportive. We continue growing stronger as we work together through our current educational and community reality to best serve students, families, and staff. We have dedicated a tremendous amount of time reinforcing our identity and legacy by committing ourselves to building a winning TEAM and solidifying a blueprint for achieving success in every facet of education at Josephine Houston Elementary School. Our students continue to adjust well in this new environment and are being successful outside of their normal comfort zone. YOU/WE have got this!

As I reflect on our 2020 Fall Semester, I continue drawing energy, power, and inspiration from Kobe Bryant’s 2017 retirement speech:

“Those times when you get up early and you work hard, those times when you stay up late and you work hard, those times when you don’t feel like working, you’re too tired, you don’t want to push yourself, but you do it anyway. That is actually the dream. That’s the dream. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. And if you guys can understand that, then what you’ll see happen is you won’t accomplish your dreams, your dreams won’t come true; something greater will.” -- Kobe Bryant 2017 Retirement Speech

I’m looking forward to continuing to partner with our students, families, and staff to ensure that all our students get the best opportunities to be successful in school and life. In 2021, I will continue to challenge myself and others to be the best version of ourselves so that we can ensure excellence and success for our students.

Welcome back from a week of 100% remote learning! It feels a little bit like we transitioned into Winter overnight. The kids are back at it and did a phenomenal job this week. We are thrilled to resume in-person and remote learning this week! I hope all of you enjoyed the weekend and spent some quality time with your families.

If your child is transitioning back into in-person learning, please notify your teacher so that they can assist with the necessary steps before the transition. Remember, you can change into remote learning at any time, but we also need to document that request or decision. Please note that transitioning back into in-person takes up to 5 days from the request being made. If you will not be making a change to your child’s current instructional status, no action is required.

Students and Families: In case no one told you today, you are doing a really great job navigating something that has no instructional manual. I hope you know how talented and resilient you are for the work you have and keep putting in.

Sadler Means is launching a new Media, Visual, and Performing Arts Academy and Dual Language Program. Please share the following information with your 5th/6th-grade student families and counselors.

Sadler Means is excited to provide our future parents, students, and community members with opportunities to engage with our school leaders to learn about our Advanced Academics, Dual Language program, Media, Visual, and Performing Arts Academy (M.V.P).

I hope all is well with you and your family. Thank you for trusting us with your children and believing in us as a school community that is centered on student safety and achievement. I can't believe it's already November! There are so many things to be thankful for and our Josephine Houston Elementary School community is at the top of my list. What are you most thankful for? Pretty soon the Winter Holidays are going to sneak up on us, so I hope everyone is taking some time for self-care this month. With everyone working so hard, I felt like it was a good time to just stop and reflect on something positive. Each day I am surrounded by our incredible students and staff and this keeps me motivated and centered. We truly have some kind, committed, passionate, hard working, courageous, dedicated, unique, and talented students here at Josephine Houston Elementary. Whether or not our kiddos join us in person or remotely, their presence is appreciated all around.

Please take a moment to help us celebrate Veteran's Day together virtually this year by submitting your responses in our form below. Daylight saving time is almost over, so get ready to "fall back."

The official time for people to turn the clocks back an hour is at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, meaning the time will go back to 1 a.m.

You might get an "extra" hour of sleep that day, but it will also begin to get darker earlier in the day. The amount of daylight will shorten each day until the winter solstice on Dec. 21.

Daylight saving time begins again March 14, when clocks "spring forward."

Why do we switch to daylight saving time?

The main reason is to make better use of daylight during the spring and summer months, so there is an extra hour of sunlight in the evening instead of the morning.

Please assist us in minimizing large gatherings in the morning by dropping off students closer to 7:30. Our school doors open at 7:33 and our school classes start at 7:35 and end at 3:08. • All Pre-K and 3rd through 5th grade students will be dismissed in the front of the school.

• All students will have a “dismissal stick” indicating walker or rider and will include student and teacher name. Students will give teacher the stick when they are picked up by a parent, walk home or stay with another teacher.

• Teachers must know who picked up student and/or how they were dismissed.

• Students may be dismissed by a grade level teacher other than their homeroom teacher. All teachers dismissing students must collect “dismissal stick” and know who picked up the student and how they are getting home.

• Our teachers should had shared a Google Form for our families to make these requests. Please make these request by contacting your student's teacher.

• Transitioning from remote off-campus learning to on-campus learning:

• The first request will occur as soon as possible, but not to exceed five school days.

• The second request will occur at the beginning of the next grading period.

Re-entry protocol applies to students who experience symptoms at home OR if they are sent home from school.

● at least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications);

● the individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and

● at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

The 10 days must be observed even if symptoms only last a short while and the child did not have fever.

If your student wants to return to school before completing the above stay at home period, you must either:

● obtain a medical professional’s note (with date) clearing the student for the return based on an alternative diagnosis; or

I know that many of you have chosen to remain with remote learning and some of you have elected for on-campus learning for the month of October. Thank you for your prompt communication with our teachers and other team members. Your classroom teacher should have confirmed your child's attendance for on-campus learning on Monday, Oct. 12th. Based on all our responses, we have reached our 25% safety capacity at this time. Family Surveys have closed for Phase I. You will continue to be notified by your classroom teacher of your eligibility for on-campus learning for Phase 1.

You will get more details in October about the Phase 2 reopening plan. All on-campus decisions will be based on the outcomes of our first two weeks in October and our capacity to safely operate our facility. The health and safety for all our students and staff will continue to be in the forefront of all our decisions.

The following groups of students will be invited to participate in on-campus instruction:
Week 6: Oct. 12-16 (Facility Capacity 25%)

• Elementary: 1st and 2nd grades.

• Middle: 7th grade.

• High: 10th grade.

• Students receiving the following specialized services: resource, dyslexia, 504, speech.

• Transitioning from on-campus learning to remote off-campus learning will occur when a student/parent or guardian chooses to do so.

• Our teachers will be sharing a Google Form for our families to make these requests.

• Transitioning from remote off-campus learning to on-campus learning:

• The first request will occur as soon as possible, but not to exceed five school days.

• The second request will occur at the beginning of the next grading period.

2020-21 ¡Cohorte de modelos de semillas SEL!

El objetivo de la cohorte del modelo semilla de SEL es apoyar a las escuelas en la integración intencional de SEL en todas las fases de las escuelas: en la cultura y los sistemas escolares a través de una de las cuatro áreas de práctica críticas de SEL identificadas por CASEL. We are committed to doing this in the safest way possible for our students, staff and families following the guidance of Austin Public Health. This phase-in process with 25% capacity on all of our campuses. This means that if the amount of students who want to return is less than or equal to 25% of building capacity, then all students who wish to return, may do so. However, if the amount of students who want to return to campus exceeds the 25% building capacity, students who wish to return will be prioritized.

Dear J. Houston Families,

We are committed to providing safe, reliable on-campus learning for our students. We are implementing protocols to ensure we are doing our best to ensure the health and safety of all our students and staff. I have been so impressed by the creativity, resilience, flexibility and grace that everyone has shown. I’ve witnessed incredible student centered work in our remote classrooms over the past few weeks. As we celebrate a successful virtual launch of this new school year, we are also preparing for the next four weeks of school as we will begin to welcome students on campus in a phased-in approach starting October 5th.

I know that this has been a new and unprecedented way to start school, but please know that your patience, flexibility, and understanding has been/is a crucial part of this year's success. I also know that you and your family have a lot on your plate right now and you have been working extremely hard to ensure that our children receive the best opportunity to engage in at-home learning. While the activities have been disrupted and our new normal is definitely not what any of us signed up for, I want you to know how thankful I am for our Josephine Houston Elementary School (JHES) families.
