Polser STEM Academy - November 4th - November 8th, 2019

What's Happening this Week?

What a wonderful Red Ribbon Week we had pledging to be Drug Free! Thank you PTA for the ROWDY Program and all of our Red Ribbon Week items! The students and staff loved it. Thank you Miss Garrett for organizing such a fun week.

It's time to Stuff the Pantry. We will be collecting donations beginning on Monday, November 4th - Friday, November 8th. We welcome any donations of cans, canned evaporated milk, canned fruit, instant boxed potatoes, canned pie filling, canned yams, boxed stuffing, canned cranberry sauce, canned corn or baking mixes.

Our Annual Polar Bear Dash is happening on Thursday, November 7th rain or shine. Students will run in the front parking lot unless bad weather, and then we will run in the gym and inside the building. Please know this is the only fundraiser we do to earn money for Polser and we appreciate any donations. You are welcome to turn in your envelopes on November 6th or November 7th. Please make sure you complete all of the information on the front cover of your envelope. We have some great prizes this year for our Top Earners. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on their runners. AM PreK, Full Day PreK, & 3rd -5th Grade will run from 8:45-9:40 a.m. and PM PreK, Kinder - 2nd Grade will run from 12:45-1:40 p.m. Students and staff will wear house shirts and colors. This is a fun event and I hope that parents are able to attend.

Our Veterans Day Celebration is Monday, November 11th at 9:00 a.m. in the gym. We would love to have any veterans of staff or students attend as our special guests. Parents are welcome to attend. Students are asked to wear red, white, and blue on Monday. We will have a performance by the Polser Singers, Hebron HS Color Guard will present the flags, and we will have special readings by some of our 4th and 5th grade students. Thank you Lauren Clubb and Allison Hughes, 5th Grade, for our beautifully designed invitation.

Miss Garrett, Counselor, is still looking for a few community volunteers that would like to present at our Career Days, November 19th and November 20th. She needs 2 presenters in 3rd Grade on Nov. 20th, 1:00-3:00 p.m., 1 community helper other than the police officer and fire truck for PreK Nov. 19th, 8:00-9:30 a.m., 1 community helper for Prek PM 12:30-1:15 and 2 presenters for Kinder Nov. 19th, 8:00-9:30 a.m. Volunteer here:

Staff Spotlight

Tonya Shaw, GT Facilitator

This is my 28th year of teaching and 20th with LISD. I taught 3 years in Louisiana before moving to Texas. I started in C-FBISD and then moved to LISD after my daughter was born. I have taught middle school art & PE, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade, and now GT. My husband, Mark, works for a computer software company and he travels all over the world to work with clients. My daughter, Abigail, is a junior at the University of Missouri (my alma mater! MIZ-ZOU!) majoring in journalism and political science. Her dream job is to be a journalist with the Washington Post. She actually got to intern there this past summer so she is on her way! My son, Owen, is a junior at Marcus HS and is on the baseball team. He plays baseball pretty much all of the time and would love to play in college. Our dog, Duncan, spends his days laying on the couch and barking at squirrels. My family loves sports so you can usually find us at the baseball field, football stadium or at the AAC watching Dallas Stars hockey! I LOVE learning and trying new things so spending my day working with students to grow them as learners and innovators is pretty much the best job ever!
