Sustainable Ecosystems

To create a "green" environment I would do many different things, including having a green area in the back and front yard. In my yard I would plant many different plants. I would also plant native plants that are perennial. My house would located in a subtropical biome because I would be living in Florida.

The plants I would plant include:

  • Poterweed
  • Leather Fern
  • Swamp Sunflower

Garden of my Own

Due to the warm conditions in Florida, a variety of fruits and vegetables have the ability to grow in my garden. I would take advantage of the warm weather and grow my own garden, also,m Florida is a large producer of fruits and vegetables. Florida has a subtropical climate where the temperature almost never fall below freezing. I would not use any chemicals in my garden because I don't want to alter the fruits and vegetables. My garden is going to consist of only "natural" and "organic" foods. I would plant lots of fruits and vegetables including:


  • Blueberries: April- June
  • Cantaloupes: March- July
  • Valencia oranges: March- January


  • Celery: November- June
  • Cucumber: October- June
  • Broccoli: October- May

My Car

A source of transpiration I would use is a Nissan Leaf. A Nissan Leaf is environmentally friendly and an affordable car. It operates using a 24kW lithium- ion battery. Not to mention, it is an all electric car that produces no tailpipe pollution or greenhouse gas emissions when of operation. It also contributes to reduce dependence on petroleum.

Waste Management

In my house I would have a plastic, paper and compost bin. I would have these three waste management systems in my house to reduce garbage and recycle items.

Adopt A Pet

An endangered species I would sponsor at the zoo would be an Amur Leopard. I would sponsor the Amur Leopard because it is important ecologically, economically and culturally. Protection of its habitat benefits other species, including Amur tigers and prey species like deer. With the right conservation efforts, we can bring them back and ensure long-term protecting of the region.

Hazards in Everyday Products

Harmful chemicals that may found in my house consist of floor and furniture polish, paint, and a variety of different cleaning products for glass, wood, ovens and more. All of these chemicals can contain ammonia, sulfuric and phosphoric acids, lye, chlorine, formaldehyde, and phenol. Floor and furniture polish can be observed through the skin and cause skin & eye irritant. An alternative for this product is polish with food grade mineral oil such as olive oil, almond or walnut oil. When paint is applied to walls and inhaled it can trigger nausea, eye and nose irritation. Paint fumes can cause long- term effects of liver damage, kidney damage and cancer. Cleaning products can cause kidney and liver damage, the burning of the vapors can burn lungs and can possibly burn skin and eyes if using too much. An alternative for this is using Arm & Hammer Washing Soda with vinegar.

Elements Found in Cleaning Products

Elements that make up cleaning products are Sodium Hydroxide NaOCI (bleach). Bleach is a non- metal and is made up of elements from group 1, group 16 and group 17.

The Characteristics of Electricity

In my future house, I will use hydroelectricity as a source of energy. I will use hydroelectricity because it is a renewable energy source that uses the Earth's water cycle to generate electricity. This resource would never run out for future generations and over time it will help reduce air pollution. The number one reason I will use hydroelectricity is because when being used, the electricity from the dam systems does not produce green house gases. That being said, it doesn't pollute the atmosphere!

Physical Structure of my House

There are various ways to create a model of energy efficiency. For example, having extra insulation. Having your walls insulated slows the rate that heat flows out of the house in the winter or into the house in summer so less energy is required to heat or cool the house. Also, you can plant shrubs and trees around your house because good landscaping can save energy. Lastly, you can upgrade or replace windows. If replacing windows, you can replace them with energy efficient models.

My Appliances

In my future house, I will have all energy efficient appliances. Using energy efficient appliances have many benefits such as it saves you money, improves the economy, its good for the environment and enhances the quality of life. I would choose these appliances in my future home:

  • Microwave
  • Stove/ Oven
  • Dishwasher
  • Refrigerator
  • etc.


In my house I would use LED light bulbs. I would use LED light bulbs because they use less energy since they are cool. With using less energy over time you save money. LED light bulbs also have a longer life span than incandescent bulb.

The Study of the Universe

An item that will be in my house that was developed due to space exploration is memory foam. Memory foam is used all over the world as mattresses and pillows. Memory foam was created to improve seat cushioning and crash protection for passengers and pilots. Another item is water purifiers. Water purifiers are used to provide cleaning drinking water and eliminate bacteria from water. NASA developed the filtration device when looking for a way to reuse wastewater.

If I had a telescope in my house I would observe many planets. Planets I would observe are Neptune and Uranus. I would study Neptune because the atmosphere is made of hydrogen and helium with some methane. Neptune also has 14 moons and has a very active climate which is very interesting. I would study Uranus because it hits the coldest temperatures of any plant and makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years. It also has two sets of rings very thin set of dark coloured rings. I think these two planets are very interesting and would love to observe them!
