Big picture

Ryan Fideldy named new Elk Creek Elementary Principal

Hello Garfield Re-2:

We would like to thank everyone that participated in the principal candidate interview teams. We are fortunate to have committed staff and community members that are willing to give of their time to conduct this process.

We had four very qualified candidates for this position. The strength of our candidates is a testament to the quality leaders we are developing within Garfield Re-2. The feedback provided by every interview team member was reviewed and included as part of the decision making process.

At this time, we are proud to announce that Ryan Fideldy will be taking the post as the new leader of Elk Creek Elementary pending board approval at the Tuesday, June 23 School Board Meeting.

Please welcome Ryan into the ECE family and his new role in Garfield Re-2.

Return to Learning 2020-21 Update

A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the parents that participated in our parent town hall meetings last week to provide feedback about their experiences with distance learning. Overall, we had over 360 parents register for one of the eight town halls and 65 complete the follow-up questions with additional feedback. (If you have not yet provided your feedback, please do so here.)

This week, nearly 90 instructional and classified staff - in the form of three task forces - met over the course of four days to share research, review all of the feedback parents and staff presented, and narrow the focus of options as we move forward with education in the 2020-21 school year. The task forces include instruction, health and safety, and parent engagement.

Each task force's goal is to create a list of viable recommendations that will work in Garfield Re-2. Principals and directors will take these recommendations to develop specifics around three possible models (face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid) for the 2020-2021 school year. Our greatest hope is to start school on August 17 with a face-to-face education model that we know works best. It is essential to develop the other models so we are able to move between them in the event that public health data necessitates throughout the year. The feedback from the staff and community, in addition to the work from our task forces, will lead to changes and improvements in the way distance learning looks, should we need to implement it at any time next year.

Next week, these task forces will all meet on Thursday, June 25 to share themes, thoughts, and ideas, and then reconvene on Friday, June 26 to develop their final documents. These documents will then move to principals and directors who will develop the specifics of all three scenarios and send a recommendation to the board of education for review.

On July 27, a decision will be made as to what model we will use to start the 2020-21 school year. This decision will be made based upon the ever-changing state and public health guidelines, as well as the recommendations from the Colorado Department of Education and the governor. Again, we will continue to keep you apprised of our work, as well as any changes that come from either state or public health guidance that impacts our plans.

Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Garfield Re-2 returns to sports

June 17, 2020

Hello Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

Our coaches, athletes and families have been anxiously waiting to begin their summer training routines. For the last several weeks, our staff has been working with the Garfield County Public Health Department, district Athletic Directors, other districts, and we have sought legal advice on the safest, most efficient and effective way to return to summer athletic programming.

Colorado Public Health Order 20-28 (CPHO 20-28) Safer at Home is the order that closed schools and restricted schools from conducting extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Our coaches have created plans for returning to athletics that meet the current county requirements and we have worked closely with Garfield County Public Health to ensure that plans maintain the highest level of safety for your students and our coaches.
