A Playlist For Demetrius' Journey Through Life and Love
THEME: RELATIONS ARE EVERCHANGING
In Shakespeare's comedic creation A Midsummer Night's Dream, he conveys many universal experiences that we humans all share at least once, one of which being that Love changes, and it doesn't matter how secure it looks. Demetrius shows this theme very well in his journey to try to marry Hermia while swatting off his persistent lover Helena. After having magic put upon him by Robin Goodfellow, he instantly falls in love with his pursuer Hermia, and Hermia is left without a lover. Demetrius also represents passion, as he is willing to go to extreme lengths to love and to care. In the end, Demetrius realizes his place with his lover Helena, and all is returned to normality as the lovers unite with their destined pairs.
SONG 1: DON'T PANIC - COLDPLAY
Don't Panic - Coldplay
I believe this song fits Demetrius because at the start, Hermia is torn between loving Lysander, but having to marry Demetrius. Demetrius tries to convince Hermia that she will be happy and content living a loving life with him. The title, "Don't Panic", fits well with the situation, as Hermia is worried and panicking about her situation. The song itself also fits, as the line "We live in a beautiful world" relates to Demetrius in where he wants Hermia to live a perfect life with him, and that the world she is in isn't that bad. Despite Egeus' encouragement and Demetrius' love, Hermia still won't marry Demetrius, which is why this song relates to the theme.
SONG 2: IRRESISTIBLE - FALL OUT BOY
Fall Out Boy - Irresistible (Audio)
Irresistible is a perfect song for Demetrius. It's an aggresive, passionate song about an irresistible human. Demetrius is passionate for those he loves, and in the song, the line "I love the way you hurt me" symbolizes Demetrius when he keeps getting denied by Hermia. Hermia runs away from the city with Lysander, and Demetrius is determined to find her and convince her, come what may. It can also represent Helena when she gets swatted away from Demetrius after pursuing him. This song relates to the theme because Demetrius greatly yearns for irresistible Hermia to return his passion and love, but she won't do it.
SONG 3: THIS IS GOSPEL - PANIC! AT THE DISCO
Panic! At The Disco - This is Gospel
"This Is Gospel" is a song where there are statements of wanted separation, despair, and truth. Demetrius treats Helena with all three of these aspects. Demetrius wants to be separated from Helena, he has run out of ideas to swat her off, and is being truthful in his feelings that are hate and disgust to her. In the song "This Is Gospel", a repeated line is "If you love me, let me go". This is exactly how Demetrius feels toward Helena, as he thinks that if Helena really loved him, she'd let him go and let him be happy. Demetrius won't return Helena's love, despite its strength towards him, and that's why this song relates to the theme.
SONG 4: THE SCIENTIST - COLDPLAY
Coldplay - The Scientist - (HD)
While trying to find Hermia, Demetrius has magic used on him by Robin Goodfellow, and actually ends up falling in love with Helena and forgetting Hermia in the process. This song relates to the theme and Demetrius' life because the song is apologetic and easy-going. Demetrius is lulled by the magic and the sudden sense of love that has come over him. In the book, Demetrius apologizes to Helena for everything he's done to her in the past and the ways he's treated her, and wants to start over with her. The song is also about the exact same thing. However, Helena doesn't believe his feelings, and denies the fact that he loves her. The song relates to the theme because the entire situation between Demetrius and Helena has switched in very little time.
SONG 5: IN THE END - LINKIN PARK
Linkin Park - In The End (HQ)
An agressive and unforgiving song, the feeling of the song "In The End" accurately describe's Demetrius' current relationship with Hermia after falling in love with Helena. The song has a recurring line of "I tried so hard, and got so far, in the end, it doesn't even matter." This represents how Demetrius tried so passionately to win Hermia over, but now that he loves Helena, he realizes Hermia is set on Lysander, and that she was a waste of his time. This relates with the theme because his relationship with Hermia went from passionate to ignored very quickly.
SONG 6: LOOK AFTER YOU - THE FRAY
The Fray - Look After You
"Look After You" is a good song for representing the theme and Demetrius' life because the message being conveyed in the song is that "I will ensure your safety if you love me". This is how both Demetrius and Lysander feel about Helena, and this results in a proposed battle. We all know the fight never happens, but both the men want their relationships with Helena to be uncontested, and didn't plan to have to fight over her. This is why this song relates to the theme.
SONG 7: SAFE AND SOUND - TAYLOR SWIFT
Taylor Swift feat. The Civil Wars "Safe & Sound" (from The Hunger Games Soundtrack)
My favorite of Taylor Swift's songs, "Safe And Sound" is a peaceful song that describes security and assurance. After Robin Goodfellow restoring Lysander's love to Hermia, everything is returned back to order. The line "Just close your eyes, no one can hurt you now" is similar to Robin's message to Lysander when he uses the flower's magic. Demetrius knows for certain that his loveful life with Helena will be safe and sound, and this song expresses how he feels to Helena. This relates to the theme because no one probably knew that Lysander would wake up back to his senses and loving Hermia.
SONG 8: STRAWBERRY SWING - COLDPLAY
strawberry swing- coldplay
Peace and happiness are prominent everywhere in the song "Strawberry Swing". This song is really an uplifting tune that perfectly describes the two pairs' endings. The newlywed pairs end up attending a play performed by the craftsmen, but their situations are finally resolved and stable. Demetrius is happy with Helena, Lysander is joyous with Hermia. The theme relates to this song because at the start, the wanted relationships were Demetrius with Hermia, and Lysander and Hermia being left with whoever they wanted but the people they yearned to live a life with. Now, no resemblance of any sort of the wanted relationships are present, and everyone is satisfied with the differences.
