Fifth Grade News

Welcome to Fifth Grade Cafe!

This week in reading we finished up our Literature Unit. The students took their unit assessment. We will move on to our final Informational Unit following PARCC testing.

We continued working with volume in math this week. We looked at irregular prisms and learned strategies for determining the volume. We also applied our knowledge of volume to word problems. Next week we will be moving on to area of rectangles with fractional side lengths.

This week, we finished up our literary essays on the short story, "Eleven." We also began our next text to analyze, Mr. Peabody's Apples. The students looked for important information that they could state a claim about. We will continue with this story throughout the next few weeks.

I Spy a Read-a-Thon!

The PTO is sponsoring Read-a-thon again this year! The goal is encourage students to read and raise money at the same time! The Rules are simple: students collect pledges to earn money for the minutes that they read over a 10-day period. The Read-a-thon paperwork is in Friday Folders! The reading begins on Friday, April 13 and continues through Sunday, April 22. They may turn in their reading log and pledges anytime after that day. They have to be turned in no later than April 30th.

PARCC Testing

The students will begin PARCC testing on Tuesday, April 10th. We will begin testing promptly at 8:30 each day, so it is important that your child arrives to school on-time. If your child has headphones to use, please send them each day for testing. Please also encourage your child to get a good night's sleep and to eat a healthy breakfast.
