The Tiger Times
Week of March 26 through March 30
Hello Tiger Family!
Speaker for #ourhouse this week is Nicole!
Remembering the “why” in what we do helps lead us to our strengths. I thought that as the years went by my “why” would change. In fact, at the beginning of the year I shared in PLCs that seeing the disparity between my own nephews life and those of some of my students was why I chose to work in schools that NEEDED the best teachers, and more support. So, I could HELP close the gap.
But then, I saw that Simon Sinek had posted a video on his instagram clarifying that your “why” shouldn’t change based on your current situation. I thought after having Luke, my why would possibly be him! But Simon disagreed. He reported that your “why” is usually based on something that stirred you in your “younger” years. Something that was underlying everything else. I was annoyed with Simon… HOW DARE HE TELL ME MY WHY! I thought I knew it to my core.
So, after my annoyance I started digging deeper. Why do I care about the disparities between what my nephew has and what some of our most struggling students deal with day to day?
After reflecting, I recognized that as a child I had everything I could really ask for. I had two married parents, went to a great school, and was involved in many different activities. What was missing was the RELATIONSHIP with my parents. They cared about me, but as long as I was the best at school, dance, etc. I don’t blame them. They were busy with four of us. They were “happy” with me, but they didn’t necessarily know me as a person. My teachers and mentors helped me feel like I belonged somewhere. They were the ones that invested and believed in me.
That’s WHY I do what I do. Because of a few caring adults that took the time to help me find my talents, I recognized that I was worthy and did have things to offer others. SCHOOL IS WHERE I HAVE ALWAYS BELONGED, AND SO DO OUR STUDENTS.
Take a look at the video below, it’s a short 5 minute video. Think about how many marbles you have left of the school year. 10! How will you spend your ten marbles? Who can you care for that will make all the difference in 10 weeks?
Nicole
