SCH Weekly
Scott E. Miller, Superintendent
Issue 8 - October 7, 2019
Greetings SCH Family,
This past week I was able to participate in 2 exciting events. The first event was the One Region Annual Luncheon where the presenter showcased for the first time drawings of a new downtown for Hammond! This vision will not only be a boon for the city, but for the school system as the Mayor seeks to attract Millennial families to Hammond.
The second event I had the pleasure of attending was the Latino Resource Fair at Irving on Saturday. What a positive and fun outreach to our Latino community! Thank you for all who invested time into making it a success!
Have a great week,
Scott

ACCU Student Council Blood Drive
The ACC University Student Council hosted a 2-day blood drive in which 100 people registered, and 61 pints of blood were collected. We are most proud of having 63 first-time recruits! Even if our recruits were deferred, their willingness to give speaks to their character.
Johnson's Farm Field Trip
Area Career Center University English 11 students visited Johnson's Farm Produce to learn about sustainable farming after reading Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma. They took a tour of the property, picked some vegetables to take home, and even tackled the corn maze. What a fun trip! Now they are tackling an argumentative essay, focusing on problems with our current food system.
Multimedia Broadcast Academy
Just a picture? Mrs. Reiser, Multimedia Broadcast Academy instructor, is teaching ACC students how to find proper lighting in a hallway setting.
Food & Nutrition
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) of 2010 required the USDA to update federal nutrition standards for school meals – with all the debate around school breakfast going on we wanted to shine a light on the USDA requirements:
The current standards for breakfast require:
- Every school breakfast must offer students a full cup of fruits or vegetables
- Students are required to take at least one half-cup serving of fruits or vegetables with every school breakfast and lunch - We will talk about ‘Offer vs Serve’ in upcoming weeks!
- Whole grains: At least half of the grains offered with school meals must be whole grain-rich (at least 51% whole grain); SCH is proud that over 90% of our grain offerings are whole grain rich!
- Calorie Limits: School meals must meet age-appropriate calorie minimums and maximums:
Grades..........Breakfast Calorie Limits
K-5................350-500 calories
6-8..................400-550
9-12................450-600
- Sodium Limits:
Grades..........Current Breakfast Sodium Limits
K-5..................≤ 540 mg
6-8..................≤ 600 mg
9-12................≤ 640 mg Limits on trans-fat & saturated fat: Meals cannot contain added trans-fat and no more than 10 percent of calories can come from saturated fat
- Milk: Every school meal offers one cup of fat-free or 1% milk
