A Salute to Veterans
We were very fortunate and grateful to have:
- Damon Affinito - US Army - Iraq War (Father of Angela)
- Jim Blaney - United States Navy (Father of Celeste & Jaiden)
- Russell Caroli - US Navy - (Edward Skiba Grandchild)
- Robert Courtwright - US Army (Grandfather of Lyla & Talia Tropea)
- Stephen Demartini - Vietnam Vet - Army (Aiden & Kylie Mockel)
- Joe Haury - West Point Grad - US Air Force (Father of Ella & Ethan)
- John Henyecz - US Army (Grandfather of Christopher & Andrew Stewart)
Our program began by Cub Scouts from Pack 350 in Westwood present the colors, and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Under the direction of Miss Walsh, the Brookside Choir performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.
The Veterans then each shared some interesting facts about themselves and about their time in the service. Students learned that soldiers do not only fight! Our guests shared how they were mechanics, supply convoy operators, aerospace engineers, and other fascinating work!
Our program closed with a special performance by Ms. Morales’, and Mr. Goldman’s class singing, You're a Grand Old Flag.

November: National Epilepsy Awareness Month
November is National Epilepsy Month. This week, a speaker from Epilepsy Services of New Jersey came to speak to fifth graders about recognizing seizures and providing basic first aid to a person experiencing a seizure. Students learned they should seek help from an adult or call for emergency help if they come across a person who appears to be having a seizure. The acronym TRUST was introduced to help students remember what they can do to help:
T - turn the person on their side;
R - remove any objects from the person, such as glasses;
U - place something soft under their head;
S - stay calm and stay with the person;
T - time the seizure
Visit the Epilepsy Services of NJ website for more information about epilepsy and seizures.
