Twin Peaks Middle School

Weekly RAM Newsletter

From the desk of Principal Mills - February 26th, 2023

Happy Sunday Ram Families!

I hope this newsletter finds you all well after the massive storm that just swept across the west coast! Students - hopefully you were able to spend your time off this past week from school enjoying time with family and friends. For those of you still traveling or maybe stuck somewhere because of the weather, please travel safely on your way home! We look forward to seeing all students and staff back on campus tomorrow - Monday, February 27th for a 3-5-1 schedule.

We have a busy week coming up as we close out February and start March - there is a late start this Wednesday morning, a PUSD Safety Summit on Substance Abuse this Thursday evening, and our Science Olympiad team starts their competitions this Saturday! We are also getting ready to start planning for next school year, and this Wednesday, March 1st is the beginning of that process...

Online Continuing Student Registration will be open from March 1- March 31, 2023. Parents and Guardians will receive an email notification once the website is open. We must receive a completed digital packet for all returning students. This will allow for proper placement of your student for the 2023-2024 school year. This annual digital process will allow a family to complete one single “family” packet instead of completing one packet per student. Packets can be completed using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection.

In preparation for online registration, now is the time to confirm that you know your parent login username and password. This information will be needed to complete the registration packet. Please take a moment and ensure you can log into https://sis.powayusd.com. If you do not know your username and/or password, you can visit https://password.powayusd.com to retrieve your login credentials. If you are not planning to return to PUSD for the 2023-2024 school year, please email me at stmills@powayusd.com as soon as possible so we can prepare any needed documents for your new school.

Course Request Forms (CRFs) will be coming out in the next few weeks for students to select classes for next school year. One of the the things you will notice on the student CRFs for next school year are additional elective classes for your students to select from. As part of the PUSD middle school redesign, our faculty recently voted to pilot an 8 period schedule for next school year at Twin Peaks MS; this will provide students with 1 additional period each day to take an elective and/or support class without extending the school day beyond it's current start time of 8:30am and end time of 3:15pm. We plan to switch to trimesters to align our grading periods with Poway High School, and will also keep our odd/even rotating blocks periods. Many students and teachers were in favor of shortening our 100 minute block periods, so we will add a 4th block period to each day, reducing class periods to 75 minutes long.

We are excited about these changes and hope that it provides more elective options for all students, as well as opportunities for students to receive the additional academic help and support they might need. Our teachers have stepped up to the challenge and are working on developing several new exciting elective options for students in the sciences, humanities and visual and performing arts. New elective offerings could be trimester or year-long, and will differ at each grade level. As we pilot these new offerings and schedule this next school year, please make sure to share your concerns with me and our admin and counseling teams. My email address and phone number can be found below, and our counselors contact information is LOCATED HERE on our TPMS website.

The PUSD Board meeting for the month of March was moved to Wednesday, March 15th, the original date for What I Wish My Parents Knew at TPMS. Because of other scheduling conflicts across the district, the event has been rescheduled to Thursday, April 20th from 6:30-8:45pm here at Twin Peaks Middle School. Please save the date and make sure to attend with other TPMS parents - this is a great opportunity to learn how to best support your middle school student as they navigate being a teenager in 2023!

Finally this week, please make sure to place your orders for your TPMS Spirit Wear! The online ASB store is open for orders through Tuesday, February 28th - please place your orders TODAY to make sure you have the latest Ram Spirit Wear! See the "RAM Pride" section below or CLICK HERE to place your order!

TWIN PEAKS AT CAMP CUYAMACA OUTDOOR SCHOOL

Even though the temperature barely got above 50 degrees this week, and there was snow on the ground when they woke up on Tuesday morning, our 6th graders did a wonderful job learning and growing two weeks ago at Cuyamaca Outdoor School. With continuous operation since 1946, Cuyamaca Outdoor School is California's largest and longest-running 6th Grade Camp, serving more than 11,000 students each year. I've been told that Twin Peaks students have been attending the camp regularly since we opened in 1971, with the exception of camp being closed due to Covid during the 2000-2001 school year.

With a curriculum designed by credentialed teachers to take full advantage of the Next Generation Science Standards, their lessons incorporate trail experiences and citizen scientist projects to create hands-on learning that is meaningful, memorable, and fun. For many students, the weeklong, overnight experience transforms how they feel about science and themselves as learners. Our Rams should also come back STRONGER TOGETHER, as sleeping in cabins with your classmates for a week and sharing a common space has a way of bringing folks together.

Parents/Guardians of 8th Grade Students

The Poway High School counselors will meet with our 8th grade students in their Language Arts classes on Monday, February 27th and Tuesday, February 28th to share important information about the transition to high school. The counselors will share the exciting opportunities that await our future Titans, provide information about high school graduation and college entrance requirements, and give students their Course Request Forms (CRFs) to select their classes.

We encourage all families to attend the 8th Grade Family Night on Tuesday, March 14th at 5pm at PHS to learn about clubs, activities, and the wide array of elective and core courses available. Families will also have an opportunity to see the campus and meet some teachers.

Students need to turn in their Course Request Form to their Language Arts teacher by Friday, March 24th and their course requests must be entered online by March 31st. Please encourage your student to keep their course request worksheet as they may not remember their choices in the fall.

Please click HERE for additional course request information and important dates for PHS and other PUSD high schools if your student plans to attend another school in the district.

What I Wish My Parents Knew 4/20/23

Please keep the evening of Thursday, April 20th from 6:30-8:45pm open so you can attend What I Wish My Parents Knew at Twin Peaks MS. This is an opportunity for parents to learn from our students about a variety of issues impacting parents and kids today, such as Social Media Use, Alcohol, Drugs and Vaping, Parenting With Guardrails, and Managing Stress and Academic Pressure. The evening is hosted by PUSD school leaders and community faith leaders to provide parents an opportunity to connect and learn with other parents how to navigate the difficult waters of raising a teenager. Plan on attending and bring a friend!

San Diego Elite Track Club

San Diego Elite is a member of the USATF (USA Track and Field) association and participates in local, regional and national events. San Diego Elite is “homebased” out of Steel Canyon High School, but has athletes from all over San Diego. Therefore, providing a training location such as Poway is a perfect opportunity to grow and expand the San Diego Elite team. San Diego Elite Track Club has a storied history, although known by other names and affiliated with other clubs in the past, Coach Ranti Harper has been an integral part of the youth track scene in San Diego and looks forward to bringing his enthusiasm and knowledge to Poway.

Trainings will primarily be held at Poway High School; however, trainings may take place at Lake Poway or another location depending on the particular workout. Training schedules will be sent out at least 1 week in advance (we are working on scheduling the entire year, but there are challenges due to high school sports having preference at Poway High School). The goal is to get in 1-3 team workouts per week with at least one of those being on the track. Meets are held on the weekends, generally Saturday, but some meets will run on Saturday and Sunday.

For more information, please feel free to email questions to: jordanbuswell@hotmail.com or call Jordan Buswell at (760) 594-1642, the San Diego Elite representative.

Poway Community Track Meet

This event is hosted by the Poway High School Track & Field Team and will take place on Saturday, March 4th, 2023. Students can register for up to three events at $8 an event. All proceeds benefit the Poway High School Track & Field Team. Click here for more details or see below! Thanks!

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications!

Although school meals are now free to all students under California’s new Universal Meals Program, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and schools are at risk of losing funds. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Plus, students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on transportation, SAT and AP tests, home internet, and college application fees. You can apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

ASES is Hiring!!

If you are interested or know of someone who is interested in working in our before and after school ASES program, please scan or click the QR code below to apply and become an ASES Program Aide! Shifts are flexible and there's a wide variety of activities and programs to run for students in our before and after school programs. Questions? Please reach out to our ASES Supervisor Jennifer Willette at jewillette@powayusd.com.
