The Staffing Scoop
Week of May 21-25, 2018
Greetings
Happy Friday Team-
Anyone have big plans for Memorial Day Weekend? I know there are many graduations, school parties and family time around this time of the year so I hope you all get to do something fun!
Wanted to let you all know that I appreciate you filling out the survey sent previously on what you would like to see in this Staffing newsletter. One of the items received was about some of the information being repetitive. Sometimes I will leave articles for more than one rotation just to ensure everyone catches it but if you ever see something that looks like it should be removed please tell me! :)
Your managers and me have started a series of meetings to focus on your feedback and voiced concerns at the skip level meetings along with feedback we have received through other processes. They will keep you informed on any items we are pushing forward and from time to time will ask you to sit in on the conversations. Hopefully we can push forward with continuous improvement together!
In memory of many, in honor of all...I wish you a beautiful Memorial Day weekend!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Team-in response to questions I have recently received from you regarding cookie delivery, summer hours, etc., we are sharing some guidelines around time and attendance below. This is for informational purposes only and to ensure you are abreast of the parameters regarding this subject. If you have any questions feel free to ask me or your manager.
BIOCLOCK
All district employees are required to use the biometric clock for clocking in/out at an approved work location. All non-exempt employees are required to clock in and out. Exempt employees are required to clock in but are not required to clock out. The summer 4 Day Work Week (10-hour days) will have some adjustments; such as non-exempt employees signing out for lunch and signing back in when non-exempt employee returns and exempt employees having to sign out at the end of the work day.
NON-EXEMPT EMPLOYEES
Employees classified as “non-exempt” are eligible for overtime pay after 40 hours worked in a week. Employers are required to pay time and a half the employee’s regular rate of pay when they work more than 40 hours in a given pay week. Any overtime worked must be pre-approved by the appropriate administrator and the appropriate administrator should inform the employee if the time will be paid or converted to comp time. Supervisors should maintain a record of overtime approval, such as an email approval, calendar notation, a memo to the staff or some similar indication the employee was notified of the type of compensation to expect.
EXEMPT EMPLOYEES
An exempt employee is not entitled to overtime pay.
TIME REPORTING
Each department is responsible for maintaining accurate time and attendance records. For each non-exempt employee, should corrections/edits need to be made to your monthly timecard, it is preferred your Non-Exempt Attendance Report be submitted weekly and submitted by pay period.
Non-exempt employees are required to:
Report absences from duty in accordance with District procedures.
Clock out when leaving the building to conduct non-district business. If the employee returns to work that day, he must clock in upon return and out again at the end of the workday.
Overtime/comp. time should be approved by manager prior to engaging in the compensatory time
TRAVEL TIME
On occasion, non-exempt employees may be required to travel for district related purposes. The following guidelines should be used when determining when travel time is considered "work time" and therefore must be paid. To be reimbursed for mileage during this travel time please follow regular district procedures.
Travel time considered work time includes:
- Participating in any business-related activities at a conference or seminar.
Traveling between work locations during the workday.
Traveling from the office to a local airport, bus depot, or train station, or vice versa.
Travel time not considered work time includes:
Participating in social activities where attendance is not required.
Nonwork-related meal breaks.
Traveling from home to a local airport, bus depot or train station, or vice versa.
Traveling from home to an in-town conference. However, mileage may be reimbursable.
Traveling from home to a regular designated work location or vice versa.
