School Mission
More than competency in the basic skills of reading, writing, and math, it is this school’s mission to nurture in each child:
The habit of creative independent thinking, a positive self-image, an attitude of social cooperation and moral responsibility, pride in self, community, state, and country, and
the ability to be a producer, not just a consumer, of Knowledge.
“In this school, we reach for the stars.”

Message from the Assistant Principal...
Dear Families,
Giving thanks and showing how grateful we are, is something I have continued to make a priority...however, I know it's something I don't do enough! With that being said....I just want to let you know how thankful I am to have such supportive parents and families here at Rice. I have had the privilege to sit in on parent conferences with you, see you at our family nights at local restaurants to raise money for our kids, cheer on your kids with you at baseball games, see dads volunteer as Watchdogs, and so much more. I am in awe at how much you give and support your students and our school. Our staff devotes a lot of time and love to support each of your students as their own child...your partnership with them is imperative to student success. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our staff anytime you need anything! Thanks again for ALL you do!
Message From School Counselor...
Dear Parents,
October was a great month! We enjoyed celebrating Red Ribbon Week and building the foundation to living a drug free life. Students were excited to participate in each day’s activity and learn how to make positive healthy choices for themselves with each day’s discussions. We are so proud of the decisions our students make each day and thank you for building that foundation for them! It was also exciting to get a visit from the Houston Astros mascot, Orbit!
November brings many exciting things! We will celebrate Generation Texas Week during the week of November 18-22. During this week we will be promoting high school education and higher education to our students. Each day we will have a topic to discuss with our students including the transitions from elementary to future schools, 4-year colleges, trade schools, college tuition, and more. It is important that our students understand how their education today can impact their future. We also have a very fun Career Day planned where students will be able to hear from all different types of careers. Be on the lookout for a flyer that will be going home in Tuesday folders.
Thanks for all you do in supporting our kids!

First Grade
In November, your firsties will be continuing and learning new concepts in all of the subject areas. In reading we will be continuing and finishing our word detectives unit on how to solve unknown words. We will also be starting a short thanksgiving unit filled with all kinds of fun thanksgiving activities along with our thanksgiving party. In phonics we will also be finishing and continuing the case of the silent E unit, where we look at words with silent E at the end of them. During writing in November we will be finishing our how to unit and will be starting our unit on parts of a letter. Then, in math we will be continuing our place value unit to 99 and will be starting two different units as well. The units will be numeration and coins along with addition and subtraction to 10. In science we will be learning concepts like movement of objects, push and pull with magnets, and day and night/objects in the sky. Last subject, in social studies we will be learning about government: levels of government and voting, culture: customs and traditions, culture/history: thanksgiving. Here are also a few reminders as well: homework packet is due on Thursday, return daily conduct folder every day, and wear tennis shoes on P.E. days. Happy Fall Rice Raccoons!
Thank you for an amazing program, we hope you enjoyed watching your Disney Stars! We will be kicking November off with storybook Parade Day (November 1st). This is such a fun time to celebrate your child's love of reading and creativity!
Your readers have wrapped up their study of informational texts and begin reading persuasive/ argumentative texts. We will be studying opinions and having debates about specific articles. Your writers will also be composing argumentative pieces, stating and supporting a claim. Ask you writers to share their thoughts with you!
In math, we will be continuing our study of multiplication. Some ways to practice at home would be to work on fact fluency and recall. As we step into more challenging multi step problems, being able to quickly recall facts helps tremendously. For example, helping your child remember their multiplication facts such as knowing 3x5 = 15 without having to count. this is our goal. Counting is perfectly fine... we just want to move them to doing as much practice with numbers until they can remember the fact automatically. After we study multiplication and related division, we will begin our fraction unit! Fractions are EVERYWHERE! Help your student find them!
In Social Studies, we will be learning about government, elections and cultures and celebrations!! your Scientist will be diving into motion, energy and SPACE!!
Thank you for your continued support! Please let us know if you need anything!

Fourth Grade
Wow! October is over and Turkey Day is sneaking up on us. Our boys and girls have been working diligently on all their work.
Our study of addition and subtraction with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions was represented in various ways including strip diagrams, input and output tables, and equations. Students will continue to practice graphing, rounding, and using compatible numbers. We will focus on multiple-step story problems in math this month. We will also begin our multiplication and division unit. Students will learn multiple ways to solve multiplication and division problems.
Our scientists have been learning all about physical properties of matter. We are getting ready to explore the magnetic field and to discover all types of energy. Encourage your children to read books and magazines about Science topics.
In Social Studies, we have covered important United States documents such as the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. The students have been able to refresh and practice their mapping skills, and we have studied the four geographical regions of Texas. We have moved onto Indians next! The students will learn about different Texas Indian tribes.
Lots of writing and reading activities are happening in the Language Arts classes. We will continue learning about opinion writing this month. We will also focus on big revisions. In reading, we are studying nonfiction. The students are studying ways to go deeper into nonfiction reading by identifying main idea along with important details that fit with main idea. Students will also become proficient in writing summaries of their nonfiction books.
From The Library...Ms. Parks
Thank you to all our students and families that participated in our annual storybook pumpkin patch! The pumpkins were so very creative which made it very hard for our judges to pick our winners!
Students have been visiting the library and learning about searching for books using the B.B. Rice Catalog. Students can search for books several different ways: they can search by title, they can enter one or two words for a keyword search or they can search for award winning books. Students are learning how their library is organized and how to access information efficiently.
Please encourage reading at home. As your child’s reading comprehension improves, they will be more successful in all aspects of their learning.
From the Nurse...
We are entering the cold and flu season. Here are a few things you can do to help keep yourself and your child healthy:
· Wash your hands frequently, for at least 30 seconds with warm water and soap
· Stay away from people who have the flu
· Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough
· Don’t share cups or eating utensils with anyone
· Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth
· Get the flu shot
Please remember to keep ill children home for 24 hours after fever and symptoms subside. Let’s all work together to keep B.B. Rice healthy!
