Prairie View's 5th Grade News
Language Arts- What an exciting week we had last week. All the talk about books got me excited. This week in Language Arts I hope will be just as exciting. We are going to be looking at our Reading Response Rubric and how we write a Reading Response. We will also be learning about characters and setting and how it affects the story. We will learn how importance having a list of seed Ideas for when we are writing. And last we will look at how we should just write about a moment in time. This will help us stay focused on the topic. We will start our spelling test next week, so make sure your child is studying their words. Have a wonderful week.
Math- Our first week together was fantastic. We learned so much about how we will work together respectfully and how we will 'Put our BEST foot forward'. Looking toward the future, we discussed how what we do today directly influences what is possible for us tomorrow. So, this week we will be practicing making specific reachable goals as we study the first Module of our curriculum. We will be comparing the order of fractional decimals to the thousandths place using area models and number lines. It matters that your child is present every day, thank you so much for having them here ready to learn.
Science- It will be a week to remember as we focus on the inquiry process and lab safety. We will conduct many pendulum science experiments, as we learn about variables and the process itself. There is no better way to learn than hands-on. We are creating 5th grade scientists!
September is Cancer Awareness Month
Friday is “Orange Out” Day in September
In August of 2010 Rhonda and Eddie Brown's daughter Chloe was diagnosed with Leukemia for a second time in her 3 1/2 short years of life. Chloe’s older sister, Bailey, wanted to do something to help raise awareness. So she and her friends who ate lunch together decided to wear orange that Friday since that is the color of the Leukemia Ribbon. After that they decided to convince others to do the same the following Friday. Word started spreading and an event was scheduled for the very first official Orange Out.
And that is how a teenager’s vision for helping out her sister the only way she knew how, became a foundation that now touches MANY…with the hopes that it will continue to reach out to others who need love and support.
Let’s “Orange Out” the rest of the Friday’s in September!
The Orange Out Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 and faith based foundation in which the purpose is to help family's going through childhood cancer by providing emotional, spiritual, monetary support as well as support research for a cure to these horrible diseases.
