Zebra Family Update!

April 2022

Happy Spring & Looking to the Future!

It's a beautiful time of year on the LHS Campus. Students have been enjoying the lovely weather during breaks and at lunch, there is a lot happening every day after school between athletics and activities, and we are gearing up to finish strong and celebrate our Class of 2022 with their Graduation Ceremony on the evening of 6/10!

One of our top priorities at LHS is to help all students graduate college and career ready! This past week, we hosted an incredible career exploration fair with over 50 local businesses who want to hire LHS graduates! Later this spring, be watching for a summer job and volunteer fair. If your student is between 15-18, we can set them up with a work permit - they just need to stop into the office to see Mrs. Pineschi or Mrs. Emerson for the paperwork!

One amazing tool we've recently launched at LHS is called the "Virtual Job Shadow" and it's a great opportunity for students to research job opportunities, learn about job qualifications, take interest surveys, and watch videos about career options from folks in the field! Students can also track information that they can use to build a resume here too! To access this tool, visit https://www.virtualjobshadow.com/login/DA7DA9/users/? Students will use their WPUSD login credentials (like what they use to login to their chromebook) to get access.

If your student is college bound, we are hosting another college visit on 5/24 - Mrs. Edwards will be taking a bus of students to visit Stanford, San Jose State and Santa Clara University - the cost is $20 and students can see Mrs. Edwards in room 11 for permission slips and can pay the fee in our student store at lhs.wpusd.org.

If you or your student have any questions about College and Career readiness, we encourage you to reach out to your student's counselor and/or our LHS College and Career Technician. If you believe your student could benefit from additional support to help them become college and career ready, then we have an amazing elective for them - AVID is available for students in grades 9-12, and your student can check in with their counselor for more information!

WASC Accreditation Visit

Next week, we'll be welcoming a team of 6 educators to our campus to review our policies, procedures, and practices in our classrooms and across campus. They'll give us feedback on what we are doing well and areas where we have opportunity for growth. They'll give us a report of "to dos" and conditions that allow us to maintain our accreditation so our diplomas are recognized as valid. Thank you to all the families who have offered input into our WASC accreditation process! We showed this video to students on Friday just so they have a sense of what to expect: https://youtu.be/ZpfQHOu4CsQ

Our Site Based Leadership Team (SBLT) meeting will meet twice more this year to review our site plans and check in progress towards our supplemental spending plan:

  • Thurs., 5/5 at 5 pm - online and in person (google meet code is on our LHS calendar)

Our site English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) meets at least 4 times a year and we hosted our last gathering on 3/31. Be watching for agenda topics of interest to our English Learner Student/Family community for next fall!

Vandalism at LHS

Generally, vandalism across campus has declined, but we find when we open multiple restrooms it kicks up. There are always restrooms open and available, though. Our girls restrooms are generally always all open; boys can find restrooms in the library, 30s wing and in the foyer of the gym. We'll continue to reopen facilities as the conditions improve.

In the restrooms, vandalism is an issue, but sometimes so is illegal substance use and fighting. We take all of these situations seriously. We encourage you to talk to your students about how to exit situations that they know aren't appropriate, and to let our staff know so we can address it quickly. We ALWAYS work to keep information from students/families confidential, and students can share information with us privately through Schoology or email or by sending and anonymous note to the admin team.
