COUNSELING
Supporting Mustangs to plan for their futures is a significant part of our work as School Counselors, and forecasting for next year’s classes is an important step in that work. Starting this month, we will present in core classes about forecasting for next year. We’ll talk about what students’ schedules will look like at the next grade level, how they can track their progress toward graduation, and how they choose next year’s classes. Families, please check in with your Mustangs about their short term and long term ideas for their futures! This is an opportunity to connect the work they’re doing in school with the possibilities that follow.
Here is our forecasting schedule this year:
Jan 12-13: 9th Grade Forecasting Presentations
Jan 16 week: 9th Grade Forecasting Retrieval
Jan 23rd week: Pre-Finals week
Jan 30th week: FINALS WEEK
Feb 6th week: First week of second semester
Feb 13th week: 10th & 11th Grade Forecasting Presentations
Feb 20th week: 8th Grade Forecasting Presentations
Feb 27th week: 10th & 11th Grade Forecasting Retrieval
Mar 6th week: 8th Grade Forecasting Retrieval
Mar 13th week: Student Forecasting Clean-up
Mar 20th week: Student Forecasting Completion
Mar 27th week: SPRING BREAK
When we return from the Winter Break on January 3, 2022, there will be FOUR WEEKS of classes left in Semester 1. If a student has fallen behind in their classes, 4 weeks is a good amount of time to check in with teachers and complete some assignments to raise those grades! If a student is doing well and their grades are solid, those 4 weeks will be an important time to keep working hard and to stay focused. Teachers and Counselors are here to support students as you all navigate the last 4 weeks of Semester 1.
We will have Final Exams on January 30 - February 2, 2023. These will be half days and the exam schedule will be as follows:
- January 30: Final Exams for periods 1 & 2
January 31: Final Exams for periods 5 & 6
February 1: Final Exams for periods 3 & 4
February 2: Final Exams for periods 7 & 8
February 3: No school for students; Teacher planning day
As the second semester approaches, School Counselors are working to ensure that all students have full class schedules with appropriate and fun classes. Our priorities for completing schedules start with making sure that everyone has a full class schedule, students have the necessary classes to complete graduation requirements, and that students have appropriate levels of classes and support. If you or your student are concerned that their class schedule does not meet these criteria, please reach out to their School Counselor.
For schedules in the second semester, here are important dates to know:
Monday, Feb 6: First day of second semester
Tuesday, Feb 21: Last day to add a class
Monday, Mar 6: Last day to drop a class
On October, our 10th grade Mustangs had the opportunity to take the Pre-ACT, a practice college entry exam, and many students showed up on the non-school day. Nice job taking advantage of that opportunity, Mustangs!
Over the last week of school before the break, Mr. Church presented about college entry exams, how students can learn from their Pre-ACT results, and returned score reports to students in their NGSS Chemistry classes. To learn more, check in with your student(s) about their results!

FAFSA/ORSAA
The 2023-24 FAFSA and ORSAA opened October 1, 2022 for students who plan to attend college Fall 2023 - Spring 2024. The FAFSA or ORSAA is used to determine eligibility for financial aid opportunities including Oregon financial aid programs like the Oregon Opportunity Grant, the Oregon Promise Grant, and many need-based OSAC scholarships. Many colleges and universities also use the FAFSA or ORSAA to determine eligibility for financial aid opportunities. The FAFSA is required for all federal financial aid opportunities including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Direct Loans, and Federal Work-Study. Submit your FAFSA or ORSAA as soon as possible after October 1 for the best chance at qualifying for financial aid..

SCHOLARSHIPS
December is a great time to search and apply for scholarships. A college scholarship is money for college expenses that does not have to be paid back. You can get a scholarship for different reasons: good grades or test scores, a special talent like in music or sports, or a specific characteristic. Here are a few websites that may help you in your search.
Oregon Goes to College - Find Oregon and national scholarships with upcoming deadlines. You can filter results to find ones that fit your needs.
Going Merry - Free scholarship search and application platform. Personalized matching. Thousands of scholarships and grants.
(FAFSA help too)
College Board - BigFuture - Earn entries in monthly drawings for $500 and $40,000 scholarships by completing steps to plan for college.
OSAC - One easy application to apply for multiple scholarships at one time.
Ford Scholars Program. Download the English handout here. Baje el tratado en español aquí.

MAA
The MAA Open House in December was a HUGE success with over 200 interested people attending! It was everything we planned and hoped for, student-centered, lively, informative, and inclusive. Student volunteers were by far the biggest hit. The feedback we received was that being greeted, having conversations with students and being able to ask questions and get answers from the Q&A panel that consisted of MAA teachers, MAA alum and current MAA students was invaluable and fun. Big shoutout to our remarkable educators/staff (Erica Fuson, Michael Fell, Stephen Grindel, Willy Dolan, Roberto Aguilar, Savi Ryan, Nathan Crist, Laura Steenson, Kim Kellogg, Jenni Bowker, and Jewel Brown). Over 30 energetic, authentic, kind and welcoming MAA student volunteers made the night (and my year). I can’t thank them enough for being willing to share all that is MAA (just for some lousy pizza) so that other creative students can learn more about and possibly apply for enrollment at MAA.
Coming up in January our theater department is putting on TOP a play January 26 - 28th. Doors open at 6:30pm, play starts promptly at 7pm. It is sure to be another hit so mark your calendars!
Our new website will be up and running at the end of the month. We are working on putting together a Virtual Open House (with a lot of great footage from our in person Open House).
If you are interested in joining the MAA Board please feel free to drop me a line or come to our next MAA Board meeting January 16 at 6pm in the school’s Community Room.
MAA Applications for enrollment are now accessible online or by stopping by the office for a paper copy. Deadline to apply is March 15. Preference is given to NCSD students and siblings of current MAA students. Remaining available seats will be determined by lottery weighted for historically-underserved students. You can find more details at the Milwaukie academyofthearts.org website (available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Russian). If you are or know of an educator, counselor or administrator who would like a presentation, have questions or would like more information about MAA, please contact MAA Director Mariam Higgins at higginsm@nclack.k12.or.us.
Artfully yours,
Mariam Higgins
Inclement Weather and Emergency Closures
Decisions to close or delay school due to weather are generally made by 6:30 a.m. or, when possible, the night before.
When schools are closed due to weather or other emergency situations, parents/guardians have several options where information can be obtained:
1. ParentSquare - NCSD will contact families and staff through Parentsquare (email, text, and app notification) in the case of an emergency closure. Depending on the timing and nature of the closure or emergency, NCSD may also contact families by phone call through Parentsquare.
2. Register for FlashAlert, which provides school closure information via text, email, or an app: http://www.flashalert.net. This is secondary system that is optional for parents and guardians, but is a good option for extended family members who don't receive communications directly from the school district.
3. Call the School Closure Hotline: 503-353-6020. Updates are provided in English, Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, and Chinese. The hotline is updated by 6:30 a.m. on days when schools are impacted by weather or other unforeseen events.
4. Visit NCSD’s website. Closure information will be broadcast at the top of both the district and school homepages.
5. Follow the district Twitter page (@nc12schools).
6. Follow North Clackamas Schools on Facebook.
7. Watch: TV Channels KATU 2, KOIN 6, KGW 8 and KPTV 12.
8. Listen: 1190 KEX AM/103.3 KKCW FM Radio
