What in the World is One to One Correspondence?
What is one to one correspondence? When counting, it is giving each item a number...a unique number. For instance, if you tell a child you need 5 pennies, the child would touch each penny and count out five pennies. This sounds simple, but it is a milestone in early math development. Oftentimes when children begin to count, they will give more than one item the same number as they count and their counting is random. When a child masters one to one correspondence, he/she can touch the objects and count giving each object the correct number. They know that a number corresponds with a specific quantity.
How can you help your child learn one to one correspondence?
Point to objects as you count and say each number word aloud
Move each object in a set as you say each number
Ask your child questions like, “How will you keep track of which ones you’ve counted and those you haven’t counted?”
Try these at home activities for counting if you are feeling crafty.
Try these online counting games together!
