From Mrs. Barry
This coming week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. I can honestly say that we have the BEST teachers on the planet! There are so many requirements of teachers today. Did you know that our teachers must:
- be "highly qualified" as defined by the state of Texas
- be ESL certified and complete annual GT hours
- complete 12 non-contract hours of professional development each year, in addition to the 36 hours done on staff development days
- complete 24 "SafeSchools" modules, with topics ranging from blood-borne pathogens to child abuse and neglect
- complete weekly lesson plans aligned to the TEKS and to district curriculum, as well as maintain Canvas pages
- be familiar with all grade level/content area TEKS and follow district curriculum
- consult with district personnel regarding reading, math, and behavior
- differentiate for special populations including gifted and talented, special education, and emergent bilingual students
- conduct required assessments and report reading and math progress to the district
- provide targeted intervention for students who were not successful on STAAR (grades 4-5)
- complete a 60 hour Reading Academy, per the state (grades K-3)
- report on the progress of our emergent bilingual students
- screen students for characteristics of dyslexia (K-1)
- participate in grade level planning and data analysis teams
- document and report student progress via progress reports and report cards
- gather data and documentation for students needing additional support
- complete a ton of paperwork required by the district and/or state
All of this is in addition to contacting parents, organizing field trips and other special activities, supporting performances, attending ARDs and SSCs...the list goes on and on! And our teachers do all of this while loving your children with a smile on their faces!
Please join me in celebrating our amazing teachers! They are the true backbone of MWE!
Meadow Wood Elementary - GREAT happens here!

Field Day Information
The H&F Department is pleased to announce that this year’s FIELD DAY is quickly approaching. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 18th & Friday, May 19th. Students in all grade levels will participate in Field Day activities. Parents may come and watch their child/children participate during their grade-level events. Don’t forget pictures will be allowed at this event.
We encourage students to wear their Field Day T-shirts (if purchased) and cool comfortable clothing along with athletic shoes. In addition, students may bring hats and should wear sunscreen as activities will take place outside. There will be water stations so bringing an extra set of clothes may be a good idea.

RSVP for Field Day
If you are planning to attend Field Day, please help us shorten your wait by pre-registering your information with the RAPTOR visitor screening program. If you are attending Field Day and have not yet had the opportunity to have your driver’s license scanned by RAPTOR, you may want to stop by the front office in advance of the event.
RAPTOR visitor tags will be preprinted if you RSVP for this event and have already been registered in the system. Please don’t forget to bring your ID to pick up your RAPTOR tag.
As a reminder you must have a valid ID and only parents/guardians, non-school-aged siblings, and grandparents (with written notice) will be allowed to attend Field Day. Thank you for helping us make sure that student safety is a top priority at Meadow Wood!
Medication Pick UP
If your child has medication in the clinic, it will need to be picked up by the last day of school, May 25, 2023. All medications that are left in the clinic after Thursday, May 25th, will be discarded per district protocol. Medications must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
Please call if you have any questions.

Lunch Visitors
We LOVE to have you come to have lunch with your children. In order to continue to allow this privilege, we need to ensure that everyone follows our protocols and procedures.
- Please remain in the mall area during your child's lunchtime, making sure any younger siblings stay with you. As a reminder, other grade levels are still having class while your child is at lunch. Parents are not allowed on the playground unless distributing birthday treats.
- Please refrain from conferencing with your child's teacher during lunch. If you need to speak to them, please request a conference time. Teachers are required by law to receive 30 minutes of duty free lunch and also need to monitor cafeteria behavior.
- Please clean up your tables and put away games once lunch is over. We appreciate all the help you can give Miss Angelica!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mrs. Barry.
