Curriculum News
During the last curriculum day we were able to look at the data from last year’s state tests for our students. We divided into groups with grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 working together to look at the results. This led to discussions on areas that our students are succeeding, showing growth, and need more support in. As we are working on our curriculum, this helps us address these areas as we move forward.
During work time, teachers were able to input learning targets, vocabulary, assessments, and assignments into the Build Your Own Curriculum for units that they teach. This process is going to consume much of the curriculum days as we work to create a reliable and viable 4YK-12 curriculum for our students.
I am blessed to be working in a community that supports not only the growth of our students, but also the growth of our teaching staff, to have time to improve our curriculum and to be able to work every day continually improving and enhancing our learning environment.

Parent Resources
In this edition of the Falcon Report we are focusing on Mental Health. A new wave of mental health care is sweeping across the country that doesn’t start with calling authorities or group interventions. This new form of mental health care is called “Mental Health First Aid”. Training and execution are similar to traditional first aid. The idea is that the more people we can get to be able to recognize symptoms and react in an appropriate manner, the more people we will be able to help. It does not eliminate the need for professionals, but it allows us to start diagnostics and treatment right away.
The website for Mental Health First Aid is https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/ is full of valuable information and resources for what this program is about. We all have a role in helping to care for our students, so I invite you to learn more about it.
Another valuable resource is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/. This website contains links to many other resources and information about what you should be aware of. If you have any concerns, they also have a hotline where you can reach them at 1-800-273-8255 to talk through any signs you may be observing or feeling.
We are lucky enough to have several local mental health care providers as well. A quick Google search came up with these options:
- Marriage & Family Health Services, Family Counselor, 612 Worden Ave E Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-0632
- Aurora Community Counseling, Family Counselor, 108 W 2nd St N Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-9771
- Robin R. Abraham, PsyD, Psychologist, 804 W 9th St N Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-9771
- Community Support Center, Mental Health Service, 219 W 2nd St N Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-5940
- Jeffery C. Banks, LAT, Psychologist, 906 College Ave W Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-2300
- Community Counseling Center, Mental Health Service, 1130 Lake Ave W Ladysmith, WI (715) 532-5580
Remember in emergency situations it’s always better to side with caution and call for help if you are not sure. In that case call your local emergency services at 911.

Staff Spotlight
This month I want to recognize our hard-working music staff. Music truly enhances the education of our students, and we are proud to have such a great program available for all of our students. Mr. Pechman, Mr. Slembarski, and Mrs. Mudgett recently hosted some events to bring fun and music into our lives!
Thank you to Mr. Pechman and the high school choir students for such a spook-tacular haunted house this Halloween! Guests who came to our building for the event had a wonderful time and we appreciate the hard work that went into organizing the event! The students truly did a wonderful job under Mr. Pechman’s guidance to put on this annual event.
Both Mr. Slembarski and Mrs. Mudgett recently attended an annual music conference and brought back some great ideas from a seminar called “Bridges to the Community; Planting Seeds for a Lifetime of Musical Growth”. This conference inspired them to incorporate dance into our day at Flambeau. Because of this, they hosted a school-wide dance to start the day on Tuesday. It was great to see all of the students and staff members busting some moves to some fun dance and Halloween music. Students left geared up to learn. Thank you to Mr. Slembarski and Mrs. Mudgett – this was truly a great idea and wonderful way to start our day!

Student Spotlight
Mr. Roehl’s eighth grade civics students recently wrapped up their latest unit, which involved the importance of service-learning opportunities. Students came up with the ideas and focused on ways to help one Flambeau student, Hannah Riel, who is currently battling cancer. Fundraisers included the design and sale of t-shirts, wristbands, and lollipops. Their efforts have raised over $2,500. Next week on Friday, Middle School students will hold an assembly specifically for the purpose of rallying around Hannah. I’m incredibly proud of these students and their enthusiasm to support someone. This is just one of the reasons that Flambeau is great – we have a culture of supporting of others. Great job everyone!

November, the season of Deer Hunting and Thanksgiving! I did find a versatile-looking recipe in the Flambeau Family Cookbook from now Flambeau alumni, Jacob Arvidson. This recipe calls for ground venison, but you could use any ground meat.
Venison Tortilla Lasagna
1 pound ground venison (or any 2 cups ground meat, hamburger, etc.)
(16 oz.) small-curd cottage cheese
1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes with mild green chilies, undrained
1 tsp. dried oregano
½ tsp. ground cumin
1 cup salsa
10 flour Tortillas (8 inch)
1 envelope taco seasoning
1 ½ cups (6 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese
2 eggs, slightly beaten
In a large skillet, cook venison over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add the tomatoes, salsa, and taco seasoning; cook, stirring occasionally, until heated through. In a small bowl, combine the eggs, cottage cheese, oregano, and cumin. Cut the tortillas in half; place half of the tortillas in a greased 9 X 13 inch pan (tortillas will overlap), top with half of the meat mixture, spoon all the cottage cheese mixture over the top of the meat layer with the other half of the tortillas, then the remaining meat. Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until heated through. Uncover and sprinkle with cheese, bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.
Yield: 12 servings
Sound delicious!
Speaking of recipes, we will soon be launching a recipe contest of our own! Start thinking, Flatbread Pizza! There are wonderful ideas out there such as BBQ Chicken, Garlic Roasted Tomato and Spinach, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Taco, etc. The possibilities are endless! We could possibly make your recipe one of our main entrée items on the school lunch menu. Watch for details coming soon!
Hopefully everyone has a safe deer season and a blessed Thanksgiving filled with family and friends.
