Principal's Message
September 18, 2020
Hello Willink Families,
We’ve completed the first full week, and I hope that all of our families are beginning to settle into these new routines. Understanding all of this change is not without challenges and certainly not without stress, but I want to thank our parents, our students, and our Willink staff for rising to the occasion. We’ll continue to monitor and adjust as we go forward.
In the midst of all this change, our community and our country continue to engage in tremendous social and political issues. Many of us have deeply personal feelings about politics, race, equity, and what needs to be done - and rightfully so!
Some parents have reached out to me with concerns that there is a political bias or agenda at Willink. I appreciate your communication and welcome the feedback. I want you to know that it is our goal to create a school where students learn and grow without bias. We will continue to be inclusive, to celebrate diversity, and to strive for equity for all of our students, staff, and families. We will practice pedagogies that allow for discussion and debate without influencing the outcome.
We have families active in law enforcement, in education, in black lives matter, democrats, republicans, and all or none of the above. We are a multicultural building, with more than 15 different primary languages spoken in our school, our homes, and our community. I am grateful for this diversity as I know it enriches the experiences of our students and for all of us here in Webster!
But we are also inundated with social media, news, and information overload coming at us from all angles. I worry that all of us, particularly our students, can be misled to see these topics as only binary - good OR bad, right OR wrong, “us” VS. “them”. I ask that we all seek to understand one another and to allow for grey areas at times. If we still disagree, we do so with respect and empathy. What an opportunity to model this for our children and students!
I’m sure you join me in concern for our kids trying to navigate all of this right now. For me, each day starts and ends with safety, but I also want to make sure that our students go home each day feeling part of this school community. I want to know if that’s not the case, and I want to make sure each Willink student sees that we are with them - to lead, to walk beside, and to follow.
I hope you all have a safe, happy, and healthy weekend. I’d like to say Shanah tovah to our Jewish families celebrating Rosh Hashanah tonight. Also, I’d like to recognize and celebrate our Hispanic and Latino American Families as we are three days into National Hispanic Heritage Month which runs 9/15-10/15. It was too long ago that we were able to come together right here at Willink for music, dancing and food last November. I look forward to the next time we can celebrate together in this building.
Sincerely,
Brian.
