BHS Update
January 8, 2022
All the news that's fit to gnaw
We believe ALL students will graduate prepared for, confident in, and excited about the future they choose.
Principal’s message
We came out of the winter break with anticipation and excitement to be together again. Over the break I followed a number of cases of COVID among our students and staff. We began the week without a small number of absences. By Tuesday it was clear that we were at the start of a surge of cases. By the end of the week we had dozens of students at home either because they have COVID or they were a close contact with someone who has COVID and not vaccinated. During the week a small team conducted contact tracing for positive cases that arose this week. In my conversation with each of the students who are ill and at home I heard concern for others around them, fatigue and some anxiety about keeping up with school. Our staff who are out are doing their best to help substitutes keep their classes moving forward.
Last week I had dozens of conversations with students who are at home sick or with students we had to send home from school because they unvaccinated contacts with a positive case. Our staff and students are concerned, some are scared, and many are anxious about being gone. They all want to be at school, in class, and with their friends. Many are feeling stress from being away from the classroom and fear falling behind. Our teachers are also feeling the stress of trying to stay connected with those students who are out of class.
Community is one of the greatest strengths of Beaverton High School. When we face a challenge we pull together and face it TOGETHER. This continues to be true as we meet this new surge. I held an open forum during Beaver Lodge on Friday and a staff session after school. Among the questions and concerns there were also great suggestions of how to support students and staff who are at home. We will be putting these into action this week.
I know there are many questions people have about when and if schools will go to remote learning. At this time I don't have any definitive information to share. Clear, concise, accurate, and transparent communication is vital during times like these so you can anticipate an increase in messages from me in the coming weeks. I will do my best to get you that as soon as I can. This Family Update contains some updates to our community practices as we move forward through the month of January. These are necessary to help reduce the spread of this new variatn..
We are a hopeful, resilient, and strong community. We WILL get through this together.
Be well,
Dr. Anne S. Erwin
Principal

Success Fund--Tradition Unites Us
This week we began planning for our second semester. As the semester begins every student will receive a bag of school supplies and goodies. Students and teachers gave suggestions for what they would like to get. The second semester kit is provided by the Success Fund. The kit is a one more way to provide all students with the tools and encouragement to excel in the classroom.
This week some of the new equipment for athletics arrived (new equipment carts for baseball and softball) and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of new computers for Engineering and Digital Photo.
All of this is made available through the support of generous donors so if you’d like to contribute to these programs and more, please consider including BHSSF in your end of year giving plans. Donation information is available at bhssucessfund.com
State testing--Opt out. 11th grade only.
The state tests challenge students to think critically and provide a snapshot of your student’s progress. The results can help us identify any additional supports students need to ensure they meet the higher standards. If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment test, please complete the opt-out form at the bottom of the page found at this LINK. Please submit this form to the main office by January 3.

COVID updates
- We are pausing our 8th grade shadow visits.
- We are re-enforcing the table limits at cafeteria tables and need students to help us out with this. (no more than 6 at a round table)
From the district
- Masks must be worn outdoors starting Monday.
- No visitors, guest speakers, or other representatives (college, military, CTE).
- The test to stay program for students exposed who are vaccinated is on pause due to a lack of staff to be able to offer the test.
A request
We continue to get an occasional anonymous notice that students are not following mask expectations. In the halls and classrooms students are doing a great job of keeping masks on and properly fitted. We remind students who are not to do so. It is a very small handful of students who may not be following the expectations. Nonetheless, we need to be 100% on this expectation. Families, please remind students of the importance of this. And remind students to NOT share food and especially drinks.
