All Things to All People
Of course, we can't serve every need or meet every request. Spreading ourselves too thin would lead to disaster. So when we decide what we're going to make a priority, we go back to first principles. Above all, we are a public educational institution; chartered by the State Education Department. Our task is to decide what that means for our community at any given time.
When the library was founded in 1902, that process may have included deciding whether or not to include novels in the collection. There was a debate raging in the profession at the time because fiction wasn't seen as scholarly enough and novels in particular were thought by many to incite improper thoughts and behavior in the impressionable masses. We've come a long way since then. Once controversial, computers and movies are now considered basic supplies. Items lent out now include everything from prom dresses (Yay, Argyle!) to power tools. Maker spaces are old news. Ebooks are coexisting peacefully with print, despite the dire predictions of a decade ago.
We look to the future as we manage the present. We're in constant touch with our communities and always seeking to serve the new needs that arise. That is how the library, as an institution in this country, has stayed relevant all these years. As the sticker on our front door says "Libraries Transform".
