MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
Thank you for your patience and understanding this week. I know it was a disjointed week with the three institute days and only two student attendance days, but we sure did benefit tremendously from having this time to train the staff on all of the new procedures we have put in place to prepare for full in-person learning while keeping safety a top priority. It also was extremely helpful to give teachers time to prepare their classrooms and complete the various tasks required in order to be ready for Monday. We are both eager and prepared to start up with full in-person learning for families who feel comfortable doing so on Monday, and are equally excited to continue having a full remote option for families who prefer to remain in this setting. No matter the setting, we look forward to finishing the year strong over these next seven weeks.
As we look forward to next week, I wanted to share a few helpful tips to help prepare families for full day in-person and remote learning. If you have any questions as we get started, please reach out to your child’s teacher, the school office, or to me directly. We are all happy to help!
REMEMBER: Our schedule is shifting back once again to 8:50am-3:20pm. This is true for all remote and in-person learners.
The lunch hour will take place between 11:50am-12:50pm for both remote and in-person learners. For in-person learners, 2nd/3rd graders will eat FIRST from 11:50am-12:20pm and then go to recess from 12:20pm-12:50pm. 4th/5th graders will have recess first from 11:50am-12:20pm and then eat lunch SECOND from 12:20pm-12:50pm. This is a change from our typical pattern in previous years, but makes the most sense due to a variety of logistical factors with how we are implementing lunch and recess. Most notably, it would be difficult for new 2nd graders to navigate their way back into the building from recess with different students eating in different locations.
We will not be having a mid-morning snack as we have done in the past due to safety restrictions, so plan on having your child eat breakfast before school.
As previously shared, we will not be offering milk for purchase for the rest of this school year. Please remember to provide for your child a drink in their lunch!
Because water fountains are off limits, we encourage you to have your child bring a water bottle with them to school. They will be allowed to refill their water bottle as needed.
We recommend students bring in a couple of extra masks in their backpacks in case one gets dirty, wet, or breaks. We have extra on hand that we will give to students, but we know many students have certain types of masks that they prefer to wear.
For some specific information related to lunch and recess that was shared in last week’s newsletter, please click here to review.
If you haven’t already, please watch this instructional video with your child if they are coming in person for the first time. This will help them to be best prepared for their first day in the building on Monday.
The Fairview staff is thrilled to welcome many of our students back to in-person learning on Monday. We know that this transition is purely exciting for some students and their families, anxiety provoking for others and a whole range of emotions for others. To be respectful of the feelings of all, we request that families not gather at the school in clusters to welcome the students. While this might be fun for some students, it may make other students and their families uncomfortable.
In other news related to next week, on April 15th and 16th, Fairview students will participate in a 30-minute presentation in their remote or in-person classrooms delivered by Katherine Ciruelas, Fairview School Social Worker, to educate them in an age-appropriate way about the topic of childhood sexual abuse. These valuable presentations will teach students more about personal safety, safe vs. unsafe touches, safety steps to follow if someone breaks the touching rule, and good secrets vs. bad secrets. All District 57 schools will participate in these presentations once again this school year in compliance with Erin’s Law, which mandates education about sexual abuse prevention for public school children in Illinois. All students will be included in the sexual abuse prevention programs unless a parent or guardian contacts me via email or phone to request that their child not participate (dophus@d57.org, 847-394-7320 x4012). Please do not hesitate to contact me or Ms. Ciruelas (kciruelas@d57.org), if you have any follow up questions.
Thank you for reading today’s message! For a few more updates and celebrations, be sure to watch this week’s video newsletter. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus

DONATE TO DISTRICT 57 FAMILIES IN NEED
COVID-19 has presented many unique hardships and challenges for some of our family members, friends and neighbors. Some parents have asked if it’s possible to make a financial donation to help support District 57 families who are currently in need. The District has set up a system to facilitate this for anyone who is interested. We will distribute the collected funds to families, based on formal requests that are made. If you would like to donate, simply go to this link and follow these steps:
- Click on “Make a one-time payment.”
- Fill in your student’s name, school and grade.
- Click “COVID-19 Donation to District 57 Families.”
- Fill in your information and donation amount, then proceed to the payment section.
Thank you so much, in advance, for your kindness and generosity.
Those who are in need of support can fill out this online form. Names will only be seen by select district personnel who are distributing the funds.
Thank you,
