Early Childhood Teachers on the Front Lines
We know that Pre-k, kinder, and first grade teachers are on the front lines when it comes to the battle to close the learning gaps between low income students and their more affluent peers. Children below grade level in third grade rarely catch back up. That reality places a heavy burden on Pk - 2nd. We must develop a plan of attack to close the gaps before third grade. No, it won't be easy, but working together as a multi-grade level team, we can help our students succeed. As your school discusses PLC and PD time, consider requesting a PK-2 team meeting time to strategize and align curricular standards and instructional practices.
Such an important role . . .
You are needed. You provide the only stability, safety, and comfort that some of your young charges will experience that day. Yours may be the only voice that reassures a little one "You can do it! or "I believe in you!" or "Mistakes help us learn and grow!" The children that challenge you the most also need you the most. Your role and relationship with your students and their families is crucially important. You provide the foundation that will help many children overcome obstacles, succeed, and thrive.
