Big picture

It is hard to believe that Kindergarten Rodeo is just around the corner on March 13, 2020!

We're doing things a little differently this year. We are combining the Kindergarten Round-Up and Rodeo into one event. There are two time slots that you will be able to choose from to attend.

To help us better plan for the 2020-21 school year, if you have an incoming kindergartner, please complete the link below. If you have a neighbor with an incoming kindergartner, feel free to share the link or direct them to our Sunflower website to complete the form. We can't wait to meet all of our incoming kindergarten Eagles!

2020-2021 Kindergarten Registration Survey

Our students earned a combined 20,237 Eagle Tickets since the start of the school year! This means they have officially earned the next two milestone celebrations: reading by flashlight (20-30 minutes) and an arts & craft party.

With respect to the flashlight reading party, we will celebrate the week of January 20th. This year each grade level will participate on an assigned day of the week: Wednesday, January 22 (Kdg. & preK); Thursday, January 23 (Grade 1 & 2), & Friday, January 24 (Gr. 3 & 4).

A limited number of flashlights are available from the office. If your student(s) can bring a flashlight from home on their schedule day, that will enable every student to be able to have a flashlight to use!

The arts & craft party schedule should be completed in future weeks.

Show Your Support of #ZeroReasonsWhy

The Gardner Edgerton Zero Reasons Why Store is open for a second and final time this year! All students in grades 5-12 were given a #ZeroReasonsWhy shirt as a symbol to support mental health education and suicide prevention. The shirts are to remind students and adults there are zero reasons why we need to feel alone and zero reasons why we can’t talk about our feelings to a trusted adult.

Now YOU have the opportunity to purchase one to show your community support. To order, go here:

Fun Contest for Teachers

In order to add a little fun to Dr. Jones' weekly newsletter to staff members, he will include a fun fact or a fun contest somewhere in the newsletter. Last week's newsletter featured one of the resources sent out by the KSDE pertaining to student led conferences. As indicated, individuals who shared how they plan to ensure student voice at conferences (or promote family engagement if you don't conduct conferences) would be entered in a drawing to receive a Dollar Tree gift card. The random number generator selected Cheryl Holtgraver's number who plans to use student created multimedia projects!

Tired of Stepping on Legos? (repeat)

We are on the lookout for white legos! Actually any color of legos! Do you have older children who no longer use the legos stashed in the closet? We can use them in the LIT Lab if you are ready to purge!

Sunflower Site Council Meetings 2019-2020

The Sunflower Site Council will be meeting at 6 pm in the library on the following dates:

9/17/19, 11/12/19, 2/11/20, 4/14/20.

All meetings are open to the public.

Kansas schools are required to establish site councils composed of the principal, teachers and other school personnel, parents, business representatives, and other community groups.

Site councils have a responsibility to provide advice and counsel in the following areas: evaluating district and school performance goals and objectives, determining methods to meet those goals and objectives, and other areas as requested by the board of education.

Remember, the work of the site council is advisory only; it makes recommendations, not decisions.

Sunflower PTO

Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has been an integral part of Sunflower Elementary for many years. Through fundraisers and fun events, they are able to provide funds to teachers, classrooms, and the school.

We invite everyone to join the Sunflower PTO Facebook page. By searching "Gardner Sunflower PTO" under Pages, you will be able to join the group and receive updated PTO information.
