MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, MR. WILLIAMS
Hello Pontiac Families,
We are now in the month of February, the shortest, but busiest month on our school calendar!
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
This is Black History Month. Black History Month began as a week-long observance in 1926. Scholar and historian Carter G. Woodson chose the second week in February, as it contained the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, to bring awareness to African Americans' role in shaping U.S. history. We will celebrate Black History Month in various ways here at Pontiac. You are certainly invited to join in any or all of the celebratory events. The kick-off Assembly will be Monday, February 10 at 8:30 a.m. We will have guests from Benedict College participating in that assembly along with our Pontiac student leaders. If you have not already done so, please sign up to read a book written about or by African-Americans to a class during our African-American Read-in February 28. The flyer is in this newsletter. More details about other events will be shared in subsequent newsletters.
HEART HEALTH MONTH
Heart health month is celebrated as well in February to help raise awareness about heart health and to urge everyone around us to live a life to prevent heart disease. Join us this Friday, February 7 as we wear red for heart health month! Friday, February 14 our students will attend a Heart Kids Challenge Assembly to encourage our students to take a part in raising awareness about heart health.
LEADERSHIP DAY AT PONTIAC
Finally, on Thursday, February 13, Pontiac will share the wonderful things our Pontiac leaders do with the community at large! Please join us as we are expecting guests from other schools and from the community. Our staff and students have been working hard to prepare for this day. The flyer with more information is also in this newsletter.
Have a great weekend!
A message from our school nurse
Parents please keep students at home if they are having flu like symptoms. These include fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, body aches and increased fatigue. We are seeing an increase in these symptoms over the past week.
Students are to remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of medications such as Motrin and Tylenol.
Our school nurse would like you to report any confirmed flu cases to your child’s teacher or directly to the Nurse. Thank you.

BOOK VENDING DONATIONS
This year our School Improvement Council has set a goal to increase reading initiatives at Pontiac through strong community partnerships. In fact, we are one of 10 schools in the state that was recently recognized for the work our SIC has done towards our goal. We’d love your help to continue our efforts!
One way we hope to do that is through the addition of a book vending machine in our school. Check out the link here for more information: https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/30/health/book-vending-machine-trnd/index.html
With the addition of this new vending machine, we are seeking funds from community partnerships and families to help us purchase books to include in the book vending machine.
All students will have the opportunity to reap the benefits of the books inside this new machine and we hope to continuously encourage incentives that give students the opportunity to select a new book. Currently, the estimated cost of a shelf of books for the vending machine is approximately $100. A monetary donation from your family or organization will help us keep the vending machine filled with new books for our students! Additionally, we will recognize your monetary contribution on each book we purchase using your generous funds. Thank you in advance for your consideration!
I invite you to help me make a difference in the lives of our children. These children will become leaders in our community. Together, we can develop a literacy partnership to provide the best for the children of Pontiac Elementary School and our greater community. I look forward to hearing from you to begin working collaboratively with our students!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS ABOUT DISMISSAL!
Further, please keep in mind that all parents are asked to drive through the car rider line, following the blue line. Please do not park and come inside the front office. This slows down our car rider procedures. It is our intent to ensure our end of the day procedures are safe and smooth for everyone!
African American Read In
The faculty and staff of Pontiac Elementary School cordially invite you to be a guest reader for our “African American Read-In.” During the month of February we want to heighten student awareness of the importance of reading. Our focus will be on books illustrated, written by or about the culture of African-Americans. You can bring your own selection or we will have books available for you in the library. Please accept this invitation to bring reading to life for the children of Pontiac by filling out the attached form.
Pontiac Elementary Elementary School is located at 500 Spears Creek Road, Elgin, SC 29045. Light Refreshments will be served in the Media Center.
