Port Angeles School District
NEWS AND NOTES - JANUARY 2023
We at the Port Angeles School District hope your year is off to a good start!
With the start of the new year and a look toward our future, we want to provide you with a financial update from your school district. The video below is from a recent school board meeting where Superintendent Marty Brewer and Kira Acker -Director of Finance and Operations, presented what could be in store for our school district if we do not receive additional funding for education from our State legislatures.
The State's Legislative Session has started, and the Port Angeles School Board has highlighted these areas and is asking our legislators to prioritize and support education funding in our district and other districts across the state:
- Address Regionalization, Salary Enhancements, and Fully Fund Employee Benefits
- Fully Fund Special Education
- Revisit the Methodology of the Property Tax Structure
- Support Simple Majority for School Capital Bonds
- Continue the Permanent Return of Timber Tax at the State and Federal Level
To learn more about these legislative priorities, click here.
The Port Angeles School District is located in State District 24, and our legislators are Senator Kevin Van De Wege, Representative Mike Chapman, and Representative Steve Tharinger. You are a vital part of the legislative process, and your voice matters. If you are inclined to reach out to your representatives regarding these priorities or any other areas that matter to you, you can click here to find your legislator and send an email: app.leg.wa.gov/MemberEmail/

Peninsula Performs! Presents: Artcycle with Marine Debris
In this class, students sorted and cleaned marine debris while discussing the environmental impact of waste items. Together, they learned about sculptures and generated ideas around creating three-dimensional collaborative pieces using wire and/or glue.
Students enjoyed thinking up different ways to create three-dimensional pieces that could be worn, hung on the wall, or placed as sculptures! Using recycled and waste items as media raised consciousness about the items we use and throw away. What a great lesson for our students!

PAHS' Sports Medicine Program is Shaping up Nicely!
Taping tables are used for treatment and athletic taping in sports and the hi-lo tables are treatment tables that offer maximum flexibility and ergonomic comfort for both the patient and examiner. The Sports Whirlpool Tub will help student-athletes by applying the positive thermal effects of hydrotherapy to sports-related injuries. Sports injuries are usually accompanied by inflammation and a limited range of motion. Whirlpool therapy tubs used in sports medicine can relieve both symptoms via hot/cold therapy baths.
Thank you to the maintenance team for installing this equipment and to Shaunna Olson, the Sports Medicine Teacher, for making this possible for our students to learn real-life skills in an ever-changing world!
