Week 5
Into September
Next week is a 4-day week with a FULL DAY of school on Friday with a 3:30 pm release. DVUSD will be closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day. Next week PTSO kicks off our donation drive for Bingo Night and our Online Silent Auction later this fall. Be sure you have Friday, October 14 saved for Bingo Night in our MPR where we will have a packed house at this annual SV tradition. Remember that PTSO members get in early to save their seats as well so be sure to register as a PTSO member for early access to all our PTSO events.

Welcome to SV Mrs. O'Dell
I am a native of Arizona. I have two children Erin and Jacob O'Dell. In my spare time, I enjoy practicing yoga, hiking, staying active, scrapbooking, and spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy having coffee with friends at Starbucks. Before working at Deer Valley Unified School District, I worked for the State of Arizona in child welfare for twenty-six years. I love working with students and seeing them succeed.

Due to our nursing vacancy there are some days when we do not have a nurse on site, and for any illness or medical issue, we will need to contact parents for pick up if your son or daughter is ill. We appreciate your cooperation as we will be running short-handed until our nursing vacancy is filled.
Visitors and Volunteers @ SV
Hello SV Families,
For parents who are interested in volunteering at any DVUSD school, but have not taken the required District Volunteer training classes we have the following training classes in place at Sierra Verde:
Tuesday, September 6th at 8:15 AM
Thursday, October 20th at 5:00 PM
The volunteer training is a requirement to do any type of campus volunteering including attending field trips with your student as a chaperone. The classes will be held in our Media Center. No RSVP is required to attend; however, you must be on time and stay for the full training. The trainings last about 40 minutes or less.
If you have previously taken the volunteer training, you will not need to attend another one. You will need to come to the front office to update your information and your volunteer agreement for the year prior to volunteering.
Below you will also find the master calendar of volunteer training dates at all DVUSD sites. You can attend training at any site.
Thank you,
Mrs. Morales and Mrs. Olofson, Volunteer Coordinators
22-23 Sierra Verde Handbook and Policies
Below you will find our Back to School Checklist of policies and procedures. In the document our SV Student Handbook and DVUSD Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook are linked for your review. We ask that you print the 1st page and sign it, and return it to your child's homeroom teacher or you can drop it in the office or outside our office in our after hours drop box. We have hard copies available in the office for anyone who does not have a printer or needs a hard copy. These forms are due back by August 19.
PBIS Rewards Update
PBIS Rewards is off to a great start this year. Students can use their points earned for being safe, responsible, respectful and kind to purchase fun items. These items are delivered on Fridays. If you are interested in tracking your student through our PBIS Rewards app, download the PBIS Rewards for Family app and ask your child's teacher for their unique QR code.
If you are interested in donating to our PBIS store, we have a PBIS Store Amazon Wishlist. You can also drop off any donation items to our office - new/gently loved stuffed animals are always a popular item.
Help stock the PBIS Store Rewards Store by purchasing Rewards directly on Amazon. If you purchase from our PBIS Rewards wishlist it will ship directly to campus and our kids can purchase immediately. Stock our store here:

Mindfulness Monday Challenge of the Week
Mindful Kindness
The best way to understand mindful kindness, is to first look at mindfulness and kindness separately. Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, int he present moment, non-judgmentally. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. In mindful kindness, the mindfulness allows us to pay attention to what is going on around us so we can be aware in a non-judgmental state, not caught up in anger or regret over the past and not caught up with worriers about the future. This state of mindfulness allows us to act with kindness and to refrain from unkindness. Acting with kindness consistently over time leads to more happiness, better health, and stronger, long-lasting relationships. Take time this week to notice acts of kindness around you. Did you show an act of kindness? Did you see an act of kindness? What can you do to be kind today?
Challenge of the Week: Show kindness to someone different every day this week. Let someone go before you in line, help clean up a mess you didn't make, hold the door open, say hello. You can also visit the office to grab a random act of kindness idea from the Give What You Can wall.
Office Updates
- DVUSD is no longer under any Covid restrictions or mandated reporting. If your child is healthy they may come to school, and if they are ill with Covid or any other illness, you just need to call them in as ill and keep them home until they are fever free for 24 hours and not experiencing any major symptoms.
- As a reminder we are not accepting any outside food or drink to classrooms this year, all birthday buckets must be purchased through Mrs. Jasperson
- If you bring your student's lunch to the front office, we have a late lunch table in the cafeteria that all student's will be able to check. Just put their name on their lunch bag and it will be delivered to the cafeteria.
- If you are calling in your student as absent, please call the attendance line directly so you can leave a message. Our absence line is 623-376-4890
- Picture Day is coming up a week from Wednesday on 9/14, more information will be coming next week from Grads
Middle School Sports
Next week our baseball and softball season was scheduled to start, but due to extreme heat, the games have been postponed until later in the month. We look forward to our opening day on September 13.

City of Glendale Update
Crews are nearing completion today installing the discharge pipe as part of well testing to discharge water from the well to a nearby manhole in the 75th Ave. and Rose Garden Ln. intersection. This effort will take approximately two weeks, after which the discharge pipe will be removed which will require similar restrictions in 75th Avenue at Rose Garden Lane in mid-September.
Scheduled to begin once again Sunday evening, Sept. 4, for approximately 4-5 weeks, well development will be taking place which requires further drilling.
Drilling activities are a 24/7, day and night activity to minimize issues with the drill rig or subsurface conditions. Light equipment is being used to maintain a safe work zone during night hours and is being directed away from residences to the extent possible.
Sierra Verde Park and nearby roads remain open during this work, and resident, pedestrian, and park access is being maintained. Please share this information with your neighbors, residents, staff or visitors.
Should you have questions or need additional information, please let me know. Thank you for your patience during this work.
