What's Happening

Graduation Gowns for the Class of 2021

Please follow this site to order a graduation gown for the Class of 2021.

Senior Portraits

Parents of seniors: If your child needs to have their senior portrait taken, please keep an eye out for a postcard from Barksdale. Senior portrait make-ups will be held in early November at the school, and appointment times will be sent home. Cap and gown portraits will happen at a later date.

Virtual Student Pictures (Grades 9, 10, 11)

Virtual students (at PR, MA, and LMHS) will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken at the Murray Avenue School on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2020. Families who would like to get their child’s picture taken can sign up for a time slot using this link by October 30, 2020. We encourage all families to have their child photographed for school recordkeeping and the yearbook. Families who would like to purchase pictures will pre-pay online. This information will be sent as we are closer to the date of this event.

We are also doing required health screenings on this day. Students will have their pictures taken and then enter into a private area to do height/weight checks, vision and hearing screenings. These are screenings completed during the school year by our school nurses.

Families should park in the Murray Avenue parking lots (back lot by the Upper Gym or the front lot) and enter from outside into the Upper Gym.

Late Arrival/Early Release Privilege for 2020-2021

We are piloting a late arrival/early release program for this school year. For more information on the requirements and expectations of this privilege, please see the link to the application. A student cannot begin the late arrival or early dismissal until the application is approved by Mr. Miles.

General News and Announcements

Updated Attendance Protocol

We are updating our procedures for daily attendance.

All of your attendance reporting needs for all learners (hybrid and virtual students) will be handled by one electronic form that will replace the Blue Card online form and the Yellow Card online form (used at Pine Road). This will also replace the need for a phone call to the attendance line.

  • Use this form to report your child’s absence. Submitting this form will both report the absence and document it. No follow up Blue card is needed.

  • Submit this form to inform us that your child has a change in his or her learning location (for example, will be learning from home instead of coming into school on a scheduled hybrid day).

  • Submit this form to sign your child into school late.

  • Submit this form to sign your child out for an appointment (early dismissal). This form allows you to enter a return to school time if your child will be returning to school.

Please Note:

If you are taking an extended vacation, you will still need to complete the Request for Excusal from Regular School Attendance, familiar to most families as a vacation request form. The form is found on the Virtual Backpack under Forms.

Doctors’ notes still need to be submitted to the school attendance secretary or sent into school.

The Lion's Roar

The Lion's Roar earned Second Place (among Senior High Schools with populations of 500-1000 students) in the American Scholastic Press Association's 2020 newspaper awards. The newspaper also received an overall score of over 700, which was an improvement of over 100 points from the previous year.

Kerri the Dog!

They say dog is man's best friend, well in our case, Kerri the dog has become room 116’s best friend. Every Monday morning, our therapy dog Kerri and owner/trainer Lois DiMarzio join our classroom’s Google Meet to share with us all the wonderful activities Kerri and new rescue “Gypsy” have been up to over the week. Activities range from grooming, fun park trips, talking to students, participating in dog shows, receiving doggy mail and indulging in tasty frozen dog treats. Students practice conversation skills with Lois! Some of our virtual students also get a chance to show off their furry friends at home

The High School Counselors have begun to utilize REMIND an app-based communication platform that creates and sends one-way messages in real time to an entire class, a small group, or just a single person.

We are excited to launch this new technology to our students and a parent within the household. Information about how to register will be mailed shortly.
