Career Day Speakers Needed!
OJH Career Day will provide our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students with opportunities to hear about potential careers from actual practitioners. We are looking to offer our students information about many different kinds of careers.
Please consider volunteering to present at this year’s Career Day on Monday, May 8, 2023. Volunteers will present to 5 or 6 classes in a row for 25 minutes or less for each group. Teachers will accompany the classes of students. The time commitment would be from 8:00 am to 11:30 am on the day of the event at Orland Junior High School.
Please complete this form to share your interest in participating by March 24, 2023. You will be contacted in the following weeks about particulars, if selected to present.
The Power of Words
Recently we have had some incidents in which students made comments that could be considered threatening and harmful. We understand that our students are still "kids" and they are learning how to navigate both their online and in person social world. In many circumstances, students find themselves in big trouble for saying things without thinking and explaining that "they were just kidding." As adults in their lives it's important that we talk with them about the importance of what we say, who we talk to, and the posts we make and the texts we send. We ask that over the course of next week you take some time to talk with your child about the words they are using with their friends either in person or online. Making sure that we follow the rule "If we don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Thank you for your partnership in keeping Orland Jr. High a safe place!

Upcoming Parent Series
During the remainder of the school year parents and staff members have multiple opportunities to participate in free webinars on various topics centered around social-emotional wellness and internet safety. These webinars are not hosted by Orland School District and we do not have the ability to choose the topics or provide technical support; however, we know that these are topics and resources that may be important and helpful for families.
Linden Oaks Free Webinar Series
Linden Oaks Behavioral Health Center is offering monthly webinars on many topics related to social-emotional wellness. These webinars take place on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 P.M.
The topic for March is:
3/15/23 – Andrea Fisher, LCPC and Kayla Heiler, LSW at 6:30 PM: Ball of Emotions: How to Regulate Emotions in an Emotional World
- Understand what teens need to do daily to stay emotionally regulated.
- Recognize how basic needs affect how we regulate our emotions throughout the day.

ABCDE Award Recognitions
Parents, do you know a teacher or staff member that has gone above and beyond for your student this year? Nominate them for the ABCDE program! This employee recognition program has been developed on behalf of the Orland School District 135 Board of Education by representatives of each of our employee groups.
The goal of the program is to give parents and community members the opportunity to recognize District staff members who go Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Every day.
The program recognizes staff members who demonstrate the values of our district culture:
Compassion: Caring for others
Inspiration: Motivating others to succeed
Respect: Understanding the value each person possesses
Achievement: Attaining professional goals on behalf of the District
Communication: Coaching others for success by providing direction
All District 135 staff members are eligible to be recognized by parents and community members. Honorees will receive a copy of the entry from the community member, they will be recognized at a Board of Education meeting, and they will receive a token of appreciation from the Board.
Culture Boards
Last school year we enjoyed learning about the cultures, traditions, and celebrations of our students and families! This year we will continue learning about our students and families through the Culture Boards with these monthly themes. The school Culture Boards are meant to help us learn more about the diversity that makes Orland 135 unique and to strengthen the community and relationships within our schools.
We are encouraging families to send in pictures and/or drawings to match the themes each month. Families can send in one submission during any or all months. Submissions need to be 8.5 in x 11 in, which is a standard piece of paper, or smaller. Artifacts will not be accepted as well as any submissions larger than a piece of paper. Attached to this email is a prompt for submissions. Please fill out the student’s name, grade, and add a 1-2 sentence description. The displays will be rotated each month with different pictures and drawings of what families are proud to share.
Pictures are due at the end of the month and are hung up for the following month. All pictures will be returned at the end of the month. The first theme is due at the end of September and will be displayed for October.
March - Share pictures, drawings, and/or a written description of women who make an impact on your life, celebrating Women in History Month.
April - Tradition- Share your family tradition that your family enjoys and looks forward to practicing (family picnic/reunion, annual 1st day of summer swim, birthday tradition, etc.)
Be the Reason
This year, the District's theme is "Be the Reason." By choosing kind, we can be the reason someone feels welcomes, seen, heard, valued and supported. Our staff and students can be the reason someone smiles today.
If your child comes home with an amazing #Bethereason135 story from his/her day, please share it with Mrs. Bushwaller at lbushwaller@orland135.org. We'd love to share the story in our next weekly update!
