Northern Southland College
Newsletter - Term 4 Week 2
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
28 October 2022
Kia ora koutou
Congratulations to Kate Bennett on receiving her Youthmark Award last Wednesday night. In this newsletter you will see a copy of Kate’s certificate. All Youthmark recipient citations and photos are available for viewing at the Ascot Hotel in Invercargill until the end of next week.
As this is the last newsletter before our senior students are on exam leave, I would like to wish them all the best for their upcoming external exams. Students are welcome to come to school when they are on exam leave to study or continue to complete any internal standards that may need to be tidied up. NCEA external exams are from Monday 7 November to Wednesday 30 November. Please contact Dr Norrish at NSC if you need any information regarding exam entries and dates of exams.
Our Year 13 students are also nearing the end of their time with us. They are an outstanding group who have made the most of their years at NSC. In the coming weeks we will be celebrating with them at their leavers' function and at prize giving.
Finally, with technology being a very big part of our lives, I want to encourage students to take action to have time away from their devices. We know that cell phones and the like are handy tools. The reality is that technology at times has become all consuming. We know that some students (and I imagine some adults as well) have poor sleep quality and quantity due to device use in the bedroom. A good first step is to keep technology out of the bedroom in the evenings. It won’t hurt students to be away from their devices at this time and maybe it will encourage us all to think of other ways in which we can get a break from technology.

NCEA EXAMS
Senior students' exam admission slips have arrived. Dr Norrish has starting giving these out on Thursday 27th and will hand out the rest next week.
These exam admission slips are very important. Students need to check all details on there are accurate - not just which exams to attend, but which papers they are doing in each exam. If there are any errors or missing items, students need to see Dr Norrish to get these updated.
Students must not write on or damage these slips and they must bring them with them to every exam (otherwise they will not be allowed in). If the slip gets lost, see Dr Norrish for a replacement.
The exam rules were also given out with admission slips. A copy of these is attached.
Students must wear school uniform to all exams, but if coming in to study, mufti is allowed. Students must sign in and out of the office if they are coming in to study, for health and safety reasons.

Year 11 Maths - Zipline in Queenstown
On Tuesday 18th October, the Year 11 Maths class headed up to Queenstown for our annual data collection at the Kawerau Zipline and Bungy Centre. This data is used for the 91032 Trigonometry internal achievement standard.
Although chilly, it was fabulous sunny weather. Students collected all their necessary measurements for applying mathematics to real life, and then enjoyed ziplining. 5 brave souls did the bungy jump.
The students were fantastic and a great day was had by all.
Year 13 Statistics
Last Thursday, the Year 13 Statistics class held their annual Masterchef challenge to test out the mathematics from their Critical Paths Achievement Standard in real life, making nachos and carbonara. They even managed to get Riley Ludi to join by video call from Germany.

NSC TRAPSHOOTING - TEAM SOUTH ISLAND & NEW ZEALAND COMPETITION RESULTS
Ten students went to Christchurch and competed over three days. Their results were exceptional with 1x HOA, 2 x 1st placings, 6 x 2nd placings, 4 x 3rd placings and 2 x 4th placings. After this weekend we also had 3 different students achieve their 100, 200 and 300 target long run badge (the amount of targets shot in a row without a miss).
Thank you to all the parents and staff responsible for organising and supporting the students, and to the students for representing NSC with integrity and respect.
We want to acknowledge Flynn Burr who, in the process of winning the South Island HOA in Single Rise, shot 289 targets without a miss. The shoot off started with over 50 people (all shot 25 without a miss in the first round). NSC had 4 students in the shoot off and all 4 made it to the top 9. 3 were in the top 6 and 2 made the top 4. Flynn and the last remaining competitor shot approximately 100 targets before his competitor missed. It was an epic end to the first day of competition.
In saying that, all students shot to an extremely high level and the difference between making a final and not was almost always just the one missed target. We are all exceptionally proud of the team the whole weekend.

Opportunities
Scholarship opportunities for Year 13 Students
This trust was set up by public subscription and other fund raising organised by the Lumsden Lions Club to commemorate two doctors who served the Northern Southland area. Doctor H B Wilson was killed in a motor accident in April 1966 and Doctor W H Olds died in January 1970.
The main objective of the Trust is to assist in any way as the advisory trustees think fit any boy or girl at Northern Southland College towards furthering his or her education at a tertiary institution.
The payment of this scholarship grant is made through John Wilson, Trustee for the Wilson-Olds memorial Trust, after the successful applicant has formally enrolled and commenced attendance at a tertiary institution, which means that the payment is a lump sum which will be made in March of the year in which the award takes effect.
Applications close with the Secretary at 3.30pm on Friday 11 November, and all applications must be delivered or posted so that they arrive before the closing time.
Application forms can be obtained from the Northern Southland College office.
