P-TECH at Watervliet Weekly Update
December 14, 2018
As part of their project on identity, P-TECH students are examining the following questions:
To what extent does genetics determine identity?
What qualities and factors of life shape someone's identity?
In English, students are continuing to read Walter Dean Myer's Darius & Twig. In the chapters covered this week, students took a closer look into the main character Darius. Students analyzed his writing and created visual representations of his poetry. In addition to reading, students have also dug more into their own identity through daily "Do Now" writing prompts and discussions. These prompts and discussions will act as a guide for students when they begin their personal narratives after the holiday break.
How can we use knowledge about ourselves to develop and accomplish college and career goals?
Mr. Honsinger gave an overview of the career planning process and the resources available to help students develop a college/career plan. Students completed a “Scavenger Hunt” in the Naviance System which helped reinforce the many resources within the program. Throughout the week, students have completed the following:
- Navigate Naviance (including career and college exploration) and understand how this tool can be useful in reaching future career goals
- Complete 180 question Career Interest Profiler (self-assessment) to explore and research careers/occupations
- Select a possible major based on those career options
Students will continue to learn about additional resources available in Naviance and will develop a presentation based on the information that they discover along the way.
Families, feel free to access your child’s profile and ask them to show you career and college options. For more information on Naviance, visit: https://www.naviance.com/
