School Closed for Winter Break December 21 to January 3. School starts again on January 4!

Principal's Message

Dear Terra Linda Families,

Looking back on 2020, we've had quite a year! While it didn't go as we all planned, I hope that you have found some bright lights along the way. I also know that it is difficult to support our children at home without the regular routines of a normal year. Here is an article that was shared with me last week that outlines the many emotions we are going through right now. It also provides some tips to respond to these emotions. Some of the emotions are actually quite positive and are leading to new opportunities!

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/speaking-the-heart/202008/the-emotions-living-through-pandemic

I also invite you to watch the video below as a family. You can then chat together about things we should all say more often. I hope the video makes your whole family smile!

As you head into Winter Break, I hope you are able to find ways for your children to engage in non-electronic activities as much as possible: play games, read books, solve puzzles, make a new Lego design, build a fort out of blankets, bake something fun, go for walks, etc. I wish you a safe and restful Winter Break.

As a reminder, tomorrow is Pajama Day! Assembly at 8:30am. All staff and students are invited to wear their Pajamas to the assembly and all day!

Save the Date for J(US)tice League Story Time: Real Life Superheroes in the Fight for a Better World

We hope all families join us for an evening event coming up in January. Members of our staff will be reading a story on Zoom about a real life superhero who has helped make our world a better place. We will publish a menu of choices in our January 7th Tiger Tale. Families are invited to choose the story they would like to listen to then sign in at 6:30pm on January 14th. We will offer some discussion questions with each story so your family can discuss the story you listened to together. If you can't decide which story to listen to together, you're also welcome to sign into several Zoom sessions so that each family member can listen to a different story! We will also have one session in Spanish if your family prefers to listen to a story in Spanish.

To help you get ready for the event, be sure to stop by Terra Linda during Grab & Go the week of January 11th to pick up popcorn and hot chocolate!

We are really looking forward to this event. We hope every family is able to attend!

January 20 will be a Synchronous Day, unlike most Wednesdays

As we head into the winter break I wanted to highlight the change in schedule for the week of January 18.

Schools are closed on Monday, January 18 for a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. We will then have four typical school days. Wednesday, January 20 will follow the schedule of a typical Tuesday.

We will do the following:

  • Tuesday, January 19 will run like a typical Monday
  • Wednesday, January 20 will run like a typical Tuesday
  • Thursday and Friday, January 21 and 22, will run like normal

Join a Snowflake Hunt!

This month Beaverton Safe Routes to School invites our Terra Linda Community and all other school communities to go on a Snowflake Hunt! To participate make a snowflake and place it in a window facing the street and then go for a walk and count how many snowflakes you find. We hope this provides your family with a fun activity and a little encouragement to get outside for a walk or roll. Use this link https://www.realsimple.com/.../how-to-make-paper-snowflakes for a snowflake making tutorial and make sure your trip is counted in the following ways:

  1. Send an email to bsdsaferoutes@gmail.com with the number of snowflakes you found. Be sure to include a note that you attend Terra Linda!
  2. BSD elementary students can also log their miles on their Marathon Kids account. If you need information on how to set up a Marathon Kids account, contact your PE teacher.
  3. Post a photo to social media with the following hashtags #BSDsaferoutes #BSDtogether #BSDmarathonkids

Parent Resources from Teachers College Reading & Writing Project at Columbia University

You may have seen your children watching videos during Distance Learning about a reading, writing, or phonics skill. These videos are produced by staff at Teachers College in New York who help train classroom teachers how to use the Units of Study in Reading, Writing, and Phonics - the literacy curriculum we use in Beaverton.

If you would like more resources to support your child at home or if there is an area of literacy in which you would like to better support your child, please take a look at these two resources:

Free Office Hours for Parents and Caregivers: Ask a Literacy Expert

Have questions about your child’s reading or writing? Talk it over on Zoom with Lucy Calkins and experienced Teachers College Reading and Writing Project faculty. You might…

  • Check in about your child’s literacy development.

  • Ask what you can do (and should not do) to support your child at home with particular issues, or in general.

  • Inquire about what to expect across developmental stages in reading, writing or language acquisition, early to later years.

Schedule for office hours - be sure to register using the link below:

K-2 Families: Wednesdays 5:00-6:00pm Pacific Time

  • Dates: December 16, January 6, January 13, January 20 (with more to come!)
