Counseling Corner
National School Counseling Week: Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National School Counseling Week will be celebrated from Feb. 5–9, 2018, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Ganoe and Mrs. McDermott at Boonsboro Middle School.
SSL reminder: 8th grade students who want to participate in community activities that are with Non-Profit Organizations should come to the Counseling Center for pre-approval of the activity. Additionally, after a student has completed a pre-approved activity, they should complete the questions on the back of the yellow SSL card and return it to the Counseling Center as soon as possible.
Vape 101: What Every Parent Should Know
The article below was published online at Raising Teens Today. There are a lot of recent articles on vaping and we wanted to share some of the information with you.
If you don’t know the difference between an e-cigarette, vape pen, or a Juul and you’ve never heard the term “dripping,” you’re not alone. But it may concern you to know that most teenagers do. Vaping is all the rage in the U.S., especially with teens. The CDC reports that while fewer teenagers are smoking traditional cigarettes, many are instead opting to vape. Nearly one in four high school students are vaping with products such as e-cigarettes, e-cigars and vape pens, and the number of middle schoolers jumping on the bandwagon is on the rise as well with nearly 10% of 8th graders admitting that they’ve vaped in the last month.
The rising trend of vaping is one that many teen parents are familiar with. Either they’ve heard their child talk about it or their teen has admitted to trying it. After all, according to many teens, “It doesn’t contain any nicotine at all so it’s completely safe.” But, is it? The most important thing to understand as a parent is that not all vaping is created equal.

February is Career and Technology Education Month
From MSDE Press Release on 2/1/18
Governor Larry Hogan has issued a proclamation recognizing February as National Career and Technical Education (CTE) month. High schools and community colleges throughout the State of Maryland will be celebrating CTE Month to promote their programs and spotlight their students’ successes.
Today’s CTE classrooms are modern-day laboratories, where students and educators alike are developing the skills needed to fuel Maryland’s future workforce and thriving economy. Guided by industry leaders and implemented by highly trained teachers and faculty, CTE programs in health and biosciences, manufacturing and engineering, construction, and cybersecurity are among those that are in high demand in the State. These fields are also among the fastest growing occupations that require specialized technical education for candidates to qualify for employment.
“Maryland’s Career and Technical Education programs provide our students with the skills necessary to compete in today’s 21st century workforce,” said Governor Hogan. “This month highlights the importance of training more Marylanders in these rapidly growing fields, which leads to more job opportunities for workers, a steady pipeline of highly-trained employees, and continued economic growth for our state.”
Maryland’s CTE students also have opportunities to participate in organizations such as SkillsUSA, FBLA, DECA, or FFA and are finding success in both the state and national competitions. These organizations help build students’ leadership skills, hone their employability skills, and prepare them for further education once they graduate. As an added bonus, nearly every CTE program connects to a similar community college program which makes it possible for students to readily transition from high school to college.
To learn more about BMS CTE programs please contact Ms. Meadows and Mr. Sharpless.
Carsons Scholars
The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 in college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. An interested student must be nominated by an educator at his or her school to be able to compete for a Carson Scholarship. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Carson Scholars must have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion.
Congratulations to Eiza Yousif who was chosen as the applicant for Boonsboro Middle School! We are very proud of all of her accomplishments!
