Mrs. Cohen's First Grade News
January 2014
Important News
I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season and that you were able to spend some quality time together with your family and loved ones. I would like to wish all of you a Happy 2014! I hope that the New Year brings you much happiness, good health and fun memories! As we get back into the swing of things, we will be very busy at school.
Important Dates:
Book Orders DUE 1/15
Schools CLOSED 1/20
Happy Birthday!
Hannah celebrated her special day on January 5th!
Spelling Stamp Fun
The children are stamping their spelling words during a center rotation.
Gingerbread Houses
The children had a lot of fun creating edible winter scenes. Thanks to all of the moms that came in to help out!
ELA Update
We have started our third anthology this week. Please continue to review high frequency words with your child at night. As the year moves forward, the stories get harder. Knowing how to read the high frequency words (without having to sound them out) will help your child's reading fluency. These are also the words that are tested on throughout the theme. The extra practice at home, in conjunction with what we do in class, will benefit the children greatly!
SPELLING Update
Spelling lists have grown to 15 words starting THIS WEEK (LEsson #13). The daily assignments have not changed.
MATH Update
We will complete and test Unit 4 this week. Then, it is off to Unit 5. Be on the lookout for the Unit 5 packet for homework.
SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES Update
The children will be learning about mammals, birds, penguins and animals that h ibernate in winter. We will then be learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for freedom. Please remember to have your child bring back the "Parent Homework" Dream Clouds no later than Wednesday, January 15th. They will be on display in the hallway for the next few weeks.
Miscellaneous Items
It might bea good idea for your child to keep a tube of chapstick in their desk (it can be placed in their blue basket and won't get lost). So many children are experiencing chapped lips and complaining about it throughout the day. Having chapstick handy will cut back on frequent visits to the nurse for vaseline.
Now that we are into the second half of the school year, the children should be writing their first AND last names on their papers. This includes ALL HOMEWORK papers. Please remind your child to put his/her names on the papers... just this past math homework (Unit 4) there were 2 students that didn't have a name on any page! Thanks :)
