Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten crew continues to work hard every single day. This week we had lots of fun activities, from Harry Potter day to Star Wars day and who could forget the amazing book fair, we kept ourselves happy and busy!
In ELA, students continue to learn about long vowels and that ever so bossy letter e! We focused on the long Ii this week. Students really enjoyed seeing the magic “e” do its work to turn the word tim into time, and rid into ride. In addition, students continue to work on their “How-to” writing in Writers Workshop. They enjoy showing their peers what they are able to do and really understand the idea of First, Then, Next and Last. We can't wait to see how their stories come out!
In Math, we are focusing on teen numbers. Students are building teen numbers with twenty. They are also working on addition and subtraction story problems. The students really enjoyed working hands on with their ten frames to create teen numbers. They are beginning to understand the idea of counting on to find the answer to problems.
In Social Studies, students will be able to locate and compare the United States and Honduras by size and cardinal directions by looking at a map. Students will be able to compare an element of Honduran culture with American culture! It is so amazing to learn about the world around us and they really enjoy learning about the different cultures!
In Science, students are learning all about animals! They are focusing on mammals, amphibians and fish this week! They are interested to see which animals are vertebrates and which are invertebrates.
First Grade
ILP - This week children continued to work on skills based on their levels using IXL and RAZkids. Our project this week was making a Mother's Day flip book all about our wonderful mamas. We also are at the very beginning stage of working on research reports. Students were given research reports differentiated according to their level and we will begin to use google to help us find information to complete our research study.
Math - We are now working in unit 7 counting by 2, 5, and 10s. This is multiplication and division in its earliest form. We had so much fun adding in a new center called Scoop a Sum. Here we take ice-cream scoops with addition facts on them and match them to the cone with the correct sum on it.
Social Studies - this week we learned about Cinco de Mayo. We watched informational videos, and listened to some fun stories. We completed our Cinco de Mayo study by creating a flip book and tasting taco shells.
Second Grade
"This week in English Language Arts, second grader’s read fiction stories and practiced their comprehension skill of the week, which was summarizing a text using the “Somebody, Wanted, But, So Then” strategy. We also discussed character’s different points of view. Our essential question was “How do People get Along” and we talked about what it means to cooperate and share. We also practiced our weekly phonics pattern “oy” and “oi” diphthongs. We also had such a fun time book shopping at the Book Fair.
In Writers Workshop students continued writing their expository writing piece which is an “All about…” book. Each student chose an animal to complete research on and is working on writing a chapter book filled with information and facts about their specific animal. We can’t wait to publish our finished books and read each other's work!
In Math this week, second graders have been continuing to master their math skills in Unit 5. We are becoming experts at reading and writing three digit numbers. In order to help us learn these skills, we have played the games “plus or minus 10 or 100”, “Guess my Number”, “Close to 100”, and “Capture 5”. We also have been identifying the value that each digit in a 3-digit number represents using charts to show it in multiple ways. We are using our knowledge of place value to help us with the vertical addition method to help us add both 2 and 3 digit numbers.
This week in Social Studies we completed Chapter 5 Lesson 4. This focused on the growth of our state of New Jersey. We were able to describe where and how American Indians lived before and after settlers came. We were also able to provide and analyze reasons why people move to a new state by identifying push and pull factors. Last, we were able to explain how a state honors its past. We also worked on gifts for Mother’s Day and we wish all a happy Mother’s Day!"

NJ Consortium for Gifted and Talented: Spring Nature Scavenger Hunt Challenge
Students in Grades 3-5 from Brandt, Connors, and Wallace TEAMED-UP and set out to explore Hoboken on a nature scavenger hunt challenge! They had to hunt for natural objects, plants, and creatures, while photographing their findings and logging information about the site where each item was located. Students enjoyed the view of the NYC skyline on the Hudson River Waterfront, they visited the statue of Christopher Columbus in Columbus Park, and they walked through Elysian Park, where the first officially recorded baseball game in the US was played on June 19, 1846, and the "New York Nine" defeated the Knickerbockers, 23–1, in four innings. After tracking down all of the items on the checklist, the teams returned to Brandt school to collaborate on a group presentation of their findings. Students observed, recorded, and discussed skunk cabbage, reeds and sedges, onion grass, various early tree/shrub blossoms, nests, and much more!
