Please join us at this learning expedition! We will be learning about fire safety in the home and in the forest!

This outing will be focused on fire safety both in the home and in the outdoors. Come see Smokey the Bear and join in all the fun activities and learning!!

Friday, Oct. 16th, 11am-2:30pm

100 Lower Lake Road

Greentown, PA

Please arrive on time by 10:45am for this event. The workshop begins promptly at 11am.


10:45am - 11:00am Arrival & preparation for the program

11:00am - 12:30pm - Forest Explorer's workshop

12:30pm - 1:00pm - Lunch together - please bring a brown bag lunch

1:00pm - 2:30pm - Wildland Fire Truck demonstration, Smokey the Bear and fire prevention activities


All participants are free.

Please bring your own bag lunch. PA Virtual will provide paper products, lemonade and water. Please refrain from bringing any nut products in consideration of those with allergies.

1. In consideration of our students with serious allergies, please refrain from bringing nut (food) products or balloons.

2. As always, to limit the spread of possible flu, please do not attend a PA Virtual event if you have had a fever within 24 hours of the event.

3. For safety: All students need to be accompanied by a parent, learning coach or other designated adult. All students must wear shoes/sneakers for the entire school event and please refrain from bringing pets.

4. If there is a possibility of severe weather, please check Blackboard the day of the event in case of cancellation due to weather.

5. All PA Virtual events are tobacco free. Please do not smoke near or around any children or the outing facility.

Purpose: Social & Educational

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify varieties of trees in the forest through identification of leaves
  • Teambuilding skill development based on identification of trees
  • The need for smoke detectors and develop a home fire escape plan.
  • General forest safety & fire safety in the outdoors as relayed by Smokey the Bear
  • How to respond to a fire alarm and plan home fire drills
  • How to make the home a safer place including electricity, stove, outdoor fire pits, burning garbage
  • How to make an emergency 911 call.
  • Define the basic concepts of fire as a chemical reaction, the major phases of fire, and the main factors that influence fire spread and fire behavior
  • Identify the types of common fire department apparatus, equipment, and personal safety equipment used for fire fighting
  • Writing activities including fire escape plan, home safety tips, safety checklists and fire drill schedules

Educational Hours to log into OLS:

Students may log 120 min in Science & 60 min in Language Arts
