Classroom Guidance Update

Kindergarten - The Kindergarten teachers felt that my "Big Rocks" this year will be centered around Character Education/The Habits, Friendship, Problem Solving and Tattling vs. Reporting. This month, we will conclude our classroom guidance lessons. The kindergartners will learn the character trait “Integrity” by reading the book Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back: A Tale About Telling the Truth. Students will learn that integrity means being truthful, trustworthy, and honest in all things. In the story, Howard knows lying is wrong, but he chooses to do it anyway. It is not until Howard makes the brave decision to tell the truth and apologize that the guilt and bad feelings (the monkey) leave. I'm proud to say that we have covered each "BIG ROCK" identified by the Kindergarten teachers this year through monthly classroom guidance lessons.

2nd Grade - Second Grade teachers felt that my "Big Rocks" this year will be centered around Emotion Management, Character Education/The Habits, Bullying Prevention, Problem Solving, and Friendship. This month, I will conclude Second Step, a research-based counseling curriculum to teach skills for social and academic success. Students learn that using Second Step skills can help them be a better learner and get along with others. We will also have a chance to explore careers! I will introduce career exploration by reading the book Oh! The Possibilities by Lori Calabrese to develop their curiosity about several different careers. We conclude this lesson by playing a game called Career Jeopardy. I'm proud to say that we have covered each "BIG ROCK" identified by the 2nd grade teachers this year through monthly classroom guidance lessons!

4th Grade - The Fourth Grade teachers felt that my "Big Rocks" this year will be centered around Peer Pressure, Bullying Prevention, Self-Esteem, Conflict Management and Career Exploration. This month, I teach our 4th graders how to handle TEASING (not bullying). We read one of my favorite books Simon's Hook: A Story About Teasing and Put-Downs written by Karen Gedig Burnett. It gives 5 strategies to help with teasing: 1. Do Little, 2. Agree, 3. Distract, 4. Laugh or Make a Joke, 5. Walk Away. Then we take a quiz on http://www.grandmarose.com/fish-school/ to make sure they understand how to use these new strategies! I'm proud to say that we have covered each "BIG ROCK" identified by the 4th grade teachers this year through monthly classroom guidance lessons!

5th Grade - The Fifth Grade teachers felt that my "Big Rocks" this year will be centered around Middle School Transition, Bullying Prevention, Planning & Decision Making, Academic Study Skills, and Career Exploration. The final lesson for 5th Grade will be about the TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL! The students will learn about their new middle school using Ipads while playing a game called "Middle School Scavenger Hunt ". The students will also see where each of our AB Combs students will be going to Middle School. Finally, to ease anxiety, I will teach them how to open a combination lock (the #1 fear of heading to Middle School). By the end of this lesson, students will feel more comfortable about their next transition ;) I'm proud to say that we have covered each "BIG ROCK" identified by the 5th grade teachers this year through monthly classroom guidance lessons!

Outgrown Combs T-shirts???

I'll gladly take them and give them to students. Win-Win! I love see the smile that is created on a student's face after receiving a Combs T-shirt. Help us pass it on!

About Me

My name is Katie Trueman and for as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a school counselor! I graduated from Marshall University (Huntington, WV) with a B.A. in Psychology. Then I pursued my dream to continue my education and received a M.A. in School Counseling. I began working at AB Combs in 2005. I think it's pretty great to be at a school that embeds Leadership, Character Education & The Habits into everything! I acquired my National Boards of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) for School Counseling in 2010. I feel honored (and blushing a bit) to be named the 2014 School Counselor of the Year for Wake County Public Schools! When I’m not working with children, I love hiking with my husband & two cute kids, experimenting with new recipes and exploring NC with my sweet family & friends.
