Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) at Home!

We will be introducing a weekly SEL focus for parents and students to practice together. Take a look to see what our focus is this week!

January Focus is Self-Awareness

Identifying Emotions: Allowing students to name what they're feeling.

The ability to accurately recognize one's own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior. The ability to accurately assess one's strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a "growth mindset".

Best Practices You Can Start At Home:

-Give students options of questions:

"I notice right now you seem upset. Is that accurate?"

"Can you show me what you're feeling right now?"

"Can you name 3 feelings that you are having right now?"

-Using a feelings chart to help students identify emotions.

-Feeling check-ins with your kids. Parents join in with kids and model identifying their own emotions too.

-High's and Lows: "What was the best part of your day?" "What was the worst part of your day?"

Remind your students no feeling is bad, it is what we do with our feelings. Kids need to feel safe to express an array of feelings!
