Team 8A Update!

A Newletter for the Parents of Team 8A

The Air of December

December is finally here, and the students are getting more excited every day for winter weather to arrive soon, holidays to be celebrated, and time off from school! This school year is flying by, and we are loving every minute with our team. We have just finished reading Flowers for Algernon. The new unit we are beginning deals with societal challenges, so it very much relates to the personal challenges unit we have just finished. We will read a wide variety of stories, including stories about homelessness, Holocaust victims, WW2, the novel The Outsiders, and many more great texts! We have several students who are currently writing a selection for the writing contest I announced last month, and they are doing a great job.

Mrs. Foss has a group of students working on a History Day project that involves many of the reading and writing skills we have been working on in our class. The children are also enjoying learning about the Constitution and their rights as citizens while they are in Social Studies class. This type of reading very much supports our efforts to have the children read higher level, non-fiction texts.

The students are working hard on many projects in Mr. Pritchard's class, including planning all of the details of our team's spaghetti dinner and silent auction. Students are responsible for ever detail from obtaining business donors to table arrangements. Mr. Pritchard and I are still in need of a great deal of parent volunteers to assist us as this project progresses. If you would like to help out, please let us know.

Mr. Pritchard also has started a wonderful STEM club that is meeting on Wednesdays and an Environmental Club that meets on Thursdays. Registration is through Emmorton Recreation Council, and the students can pick up an information form in his classroom.

I hope that 2015 has been a wonderful year for you and your child, and that your child is loving team 8A! We are looking forward to the new year and all of the new and exciting things to come!

Happy Holidays!

Dottie
