Chapter 9
Visualizing with Technology
Visualization Tools
- Draw and Paint Programs
- Scientific Visualization Tools
- Mathematical Visualization Tools
- GIS Tools
- Sketching Tools
- Digital Cameras & Mobile Phones
- Video Productions
- Video Modeling & Feedback
Sketchcast
A tool to help the least artistic among us. It makes a movie of what one draws.
Spartan
A program to manipulate molecules.
Graphic Calculators
Programs on graphing calculators can produce visual representations of the data input.
Geography Information Systems (GIS)
A system for storing, retrieving, displaying, analyzing, and manipulating geographic data.
Digital Cameras
Feature light weight, multiple megapixels for high resolution pictures, zoom lenses, selectable color modes, and a host of other technical features.
Mobile Phones
Enable user to take picture with their telephone. Although they do not possess the picture resolution of digital cameras, they can be sent to other people instantaneously. They are much lighter and more portable than digital cameras, however, the picture quality is not as good.
Video Cameras
Today, they record images digitally. Recreating the image is a matter of lighting up each pixel on the screen. LCD video screens are equipped for viewing the subject while recording.
Video Modeling & Feedback
Video can help learners reflect on their own performance primarily through video feedback - that is, the process of videotaping a performance and then viewing that performance, with or without a teacher or expert present.
Visualizing with Technology
Visualization activities can help students:
- Think Creatively
- Work Creatively with Others
- Implement Innovations
- Solve Problems
- Communicate Clearly
- Collaborate with Others
- Access & Evaluate Information
- Analyze Media
