The World According to Humphrey
Welcome, Humphrey!
Dear West Freehold School Families,
We are excited to announce that West Freehold School is taking part in a community-wide shared reading event once again!
Today, during a special assembly organized by a talented group of staff members, our students were introduced to the book The World According to Humphrey, by Betty G Birney. Each West Freehold School family will receive a copy of the book which will be brought home by the youngest student in the building. Every student will receive a special The World According to Humphry bookmark which includes the reading schedule on the back.
Our hope is for each family to make time to participate in this special reading event and create special memories of their own! Reading to your children is important because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at West Freehold School. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff – will all be following along together. Further, every elementary school in our district will be reading the book as well!
In school, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. We will also be sharing some exciting activities that your family can participate in as you read the book. Be on the lookout for shared ways you can involve you whole family in this schoolwide and districtwide reading adventure!
This is a novel program in which children of all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected The World According to Humphrey because it can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children. In addition, there are many underlying themes that will provide parents with opportunities to talk with their children about friendship, acceptance and kindness.
We know that you will enjoy this special reading time with your family. When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at West Freehold School!
