Holly Academy News & Views
August 7, 2020
We are proud that Holly Academy was the first of CMU's public school academies to have their COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan approved and submitted to MDE. Our comprehensive plan can be viewed on the homepage of our website. As always, we "dare to be remarkable" in all that we do!
* Should conditions improve, will the online option be canceled?
No, Husky Virtual Academy will be an option for our families the entire 20-21 school year.
* If our Husky is an online student and we decide to send him/her back to in-person learning at the beginning of a marking period will they be placed with the homeroom teacher he/she would have been placed with for the 20-21 school year?
Yes. All HA students have been placed in homerooms with in-person teachers should they decide to return to face to face learning. However, online students will be placed with an HA online teacher while learning virtually.
* If I have committed to in-person learning for my Husky do I have to wait until the end of a marking period to go online if COVID conditions change?
No. In-person families may pivot to online, but online students cannot become in-person students until the beginning of a subsequent marking period.
Students will access Husky Virtual Academy (HVA) through the Odysseyware platform.
Students will complete 180 days of learning on the platform, the same as students who are participating in face to face learning.
HVA consists of online units and lessons aligned by Holly Academy teachers, but not directly taught by HA teachers.
Two HA teachers will oversee the program. Students will be assigned one of these teachers as the point of contact for online work. This teacher will record attendance, monitor progress and answer questions. The teacher will also hold virtual meetings with students. At this point we are not sure of the frequency of these virtual meetings.
The majority of the work in HVA will be in the form of self-guided, online assignments. This will look different in each subject area and grade level.
Young 5s - 2nd grade will spend approximately 30 minutes per subject on the platform. Young 5 students will be offered reading and math in HVA. Kindergarten through second grade students will have the following subjects: ELA (reading, writing), science, social studies, math (through the Big Ideas program), Spanish, P.E. and music. Aligning with our face to face model, Spanish, P.E., and music will be completed every other day. These students will participate in reading groups with the Holly Academy teacher assigned to them through Husky Virtual Academy.
3rd grade - 5th grade will spend approximately one hour per subject on the platform. Third through fifth grade students will have the following subjects: ELA (reading, writing), science, social studies, math (through the Big Ideas program), Spanish, P.E. and music. Aligning with our face to face model, Spanish, PE, and music will be completed every other day.
6th grade - 8th grade will spend approximately one hour per subject on the platform. Sixth through eighth grade students will have the following subjects: ELA (reading, writing), science, social studies, math (through the Big Ideas program), Spanish, and P.E. Aligning with our face to face model, Spanish and PE will be completed every other day.
Work has to be completed per day, but does not have to be completed in the confines of a “traditional” school day (8:00-3:15).
Parents will receive a username and password for Odysseyware to monitor their child’s progress.
Families who choose HVA will be trained on Odysseyware the first week of school.
If a family decides to begin in person and then wants to pivot to blended or online, they may do so at any point in the marking period.
Students who begin in virtual or blended learning must remain so until the beginning of a new marking period.
