South Middle School

Est. 1932...The Spartan tradition continues

JANUARY 2022

Best Wishes in 2022!

South Families,

Wow, we are already halfway through the school year. January marks the midpoint of the

school year today, January 14th, with the new quarter and semester starting on Tuesday,

January 18th. There is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday, January 17th as teachers will be

engaged with a professional learning opportunity.

The district has sent or will send out a “COVID-19 Update” very soon. Please review this

important document to understand the updated isolation period for those who test positive,

quarantine periods for close contacts, and recommendations regarding masks. I sincerely hope we can get through this new variant and safely continue in-person learning. Therefore, I want to thank you in advance for abiding by the protocols and doing your part to keep our entire South Middle School Community healthy and safe.

Please check out the rest of this newsletter for more important reminders and information.

Happy New Year!

MUSIC NOTES

South Band:

All band families, please be sure that our upcoming Winter Concert is on your calendar. The grade 6-8 bands and grades 7-8 jazz band will have their next concert on Tuesday, February 15 at 7pm. I hope you are looking forward to hearing all of the progress that these ensembles are making this year!

The annual Myra Jazz Band Festival will be held on Tuesday, January 25, and Wednesday, January 26, 2022. Area middle school jazz bands will be performing on the morning of January 25. The South Jazz Band is scheduled to perform at 9:30 am at the Red River High School Performance Hall that morning. Parents are invited to attend this performance. After performing, our guest clinicians will be providing feedback and working with each group on stage for a few minutes.

The high school bands and Myra Jazz Arts Band will perform on Wednesday, January 30. The Myra Jazz Arts Band is comprised of local educators and musicians to play as a backup band featuring our guest artists. Our clinicians and guest artists are Adam Meckler on trumpet and Ryan Christianson on trombone. Adam Meckler is the Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan Technological University and also a touring jazz musician in the midwest. Ryan Christianson is a freelance musician in the Chicago area who plays with groups like the Dallas Brass, McNasty Brass Band, and the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. They are going to be awesome! Given that this date falls on an early dismissal day, our South jazz students will not be traveling as a group to attend this AMAZING performance; however, I encourage ALL jazz and/or band musicians and their families to attend if they are able. The concert will be held at 1:00pm on January 26 in the Red River High School Performing Arts Auditorium, and it is open to the public.

South Choir All-State Honors:

Congratulations to Brooke McCarthy, Nivanthi Wijetunga, and Ashlyn Pinard (alternate) who were named to the ND All-State Honor Choir. They will participate in the ACDA All-State Choir Festival in Grand Forks In February. Great Job!

All City Orchestra Festival & Concert:

We are thrilled to once again hold our annual All City Orchestra festival with guest clinicians! This year's festival will take place on Thursday, January 20 with guest clinicians, The Moxie Strings! Middle school orchestra students will bus to Red River HS for rehearsals and clinics, running from 9:00-2:00. Orchestra students should bring $5.00 to Mrs. McFarlane as soon as possible for the pizza lunch, or let her know if you will bring lunch from home or need other accommodations. Students will meet back at RRHS at 6:30pm, for a 7:00 concert with The Moxie Strings! This concert is open to the public! Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students/senior citizens. Please call 746-2411 for ticket reservations.

Grade 6 Choir:

The 6th Grade Choir began in October under the direction of Mrs. Becky Mercer. Choir practice is being held on Tuesdays in the General Music classroom from 3:35-4:20 p.m.

The South Middle School music department always welcomes the donation of instruments and old lesson books. The music department also collects General Mills Box Tops.

Athletics Webpage

An Athletics webpage update for you. Beginning with Block III, middle school schedules (including tournaments, jamborees, etc.) will be on the SchoolToday platform. This webpage DOES NOT include practices. That means all schedules can now be found/linked to one central URL: https://www.grandforksmsleague.org/.

A how-to document is also available and has been linked to on all of the webpages: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RNwNXqmYXHQzNvewYYS_DlMx7xnFBkez/view

Thor's Thoughts

Hello South Spartan Families:

I just wanted to have a chance to let all of our families know that I am moving onto a new position. I am so sad to leave all of our amazing students and staff, but am leaving you all in great hands! Cpl. Matt Bullinger had a chance to shadow me at the school, and will officially start as the new School Resource Officer on Monday January 3rd. His phone number will be the same as mine (701-740-8079), so please keep that number in all of your phones.

I am so thankful for the wonderful experience I have had at South, and have loved being a part of our students' lives. Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve your children. I wish them all the best in their futures, and know they will do amazing things!

Best,

Officer Thor

Let your student in on all of the things you find wonderful about them. They need to hear many positive comments about their lives, who they are as individuals, and all of the great things they have to look forward to if they are safe and healthy.
