Hawk Squawk January 2019
A Newsletter from Hiteon's Parent Teacher Club (PTC)
Presidents' Message
Dear Hiteon Families,
We hope you had a great break and came back refreshed and ready for 2019! We kicked off the new year with our January PTC meeting. Here are the highlights:
- Fun Run is right around the corner! This is our largest fundraiser of the school year and raises over $45,000 annually which goes directly back to our children’s experience at Hiteon. The first planning meeting was Thursday, January 17th. We still need additional parent volunteers to help make this event a success. If you would like to be on the Fun Run committee, please reach out to Amy Harrison via email: vp1fundraising@hiteonptc.org
- We would like to thank Bull Mountain Orthodontics, Omega Gymnastics, and Camas Transportation for becoming our newest 2019 Fun Run Sponsors! Thank you so much for your support!
- We are half-way to reaching our goal of $3,500.00 in Corporate Sponsorships. If you are interested in learning more about sponsoring our Hiteon 2019 Fun Run, please reach out to Alicia via email: president@hiteonptc.org or visit our PTC Website at www.hiteonptc.org
- The PTC is actively looking to fill multiple Board Positions for the 2019-2020 school year. Ideally, we would like to see these positions filled by April 1, 2019 so incoming board members can shadow current board members. A list of open positions is posted on our PTC Website, and described below. If you're interested in learning more about serving on the PTC Board, please contact Marilee Shafer via email: president@hiteonptc.org
- We look forward to seeing our Hiteon Families come together for our second annual Hiteon Family Movie night on Friday, January 25th at 6 PM!
The PTC is parent-run and we need your feedback and suggestions to plan, implement and budget for student enrichment programs and staff support. Please join us Wednesday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m. for our PTC General Meeting.

The PTC Board Wants You!
In lieu of our newer monthly "Volunteer Spotlight" feature, this month the PTC Board would like to highlight a number of upcoming open board positions.
Can you believe we are already in 2019? Time is flying by and before you know it the school year will be coming to a close. So with that in mind we need to start looking into who will be taking over the opening PTC Board positions for the 2019-2020 school year. The Board has provided brief descriptions of what each open position does and would invite anyone who is interested to contact that position and ask questions, perhaps shadow for a week and see what it is all about. Many of these opportunities can be Co-Positions, and the Board is lots of fun. The Hiteon PTC is a non-profit with term limits of 2 years in a row per position. Six of eight people on the current Board have served their limit so we are looking to fill at least one person in each of these positions.
What happens should we not form a full board? Well, we must have at least a President, First Vice President, and a Treasurer. If we can’t fill those positions then the non-profit will have to dissolve and all monies that our children have raised will revert to the school to do with as they see fit. This would mean the end of PTC-sponsored activities such as Art Lit, Reading Incentive, Science Expo, Bingo Night, Family Dance, Art & Culture Night, class parties, some assemblies, and many other activities that help enrich our children at Hiteon. This would be sad to see this all go so please take a moment and read through our open Board Positions to see where you may be able to assist.
President
The PTC president oversees the PTC executive board and serves as a liaison to the Hiteon staff. Through monthly meetings with the Principal and Vice-Principal, the president collaborates with Hiteon administrative staff to address the needs of the Hiteon community. The PTC president also schedules and runs board and general PTC meetings and supports the executive board members in their roles.
For more information please contact President@hiteonptc.org
First Vice President (VP1)
This position works in conjunction with several committees and would oversee all fundraising activities at Hiteon...for example Fun Run, Popcorn, Dining 4 Dollars & Book Fair. It is a great way to get involved! For more information please contact VP1fundraising@hiteonptc.org
Second Vice President (VP2)
The VP2 is a liaison between the committee chairs and the board. The VP2 helps the committee chairs with anything they need including budget concerns, recruiting volunteers, and providing information on what the committee does. The VP2 attends the events and assists where needed. For more information please contact VP2committees@hiteonptc.org
Treasurer
The treasurer is involved in the PTC as an officer of the board and in many PTC-sponsored activities. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining the annual budget, banking, monthly audits, and all reimbursement requests. The treasurer is also very involved in the annual Fun Run. Ideally the incoming treasurer could shadow that process during this year’s Fun Run.
For more information please contact Treasurer@hiteonptc.org
Volunteer Coordinator
The main duty of the volunteer coordinator is to make sure that all activities have adequate staffing, and to assist at those events when needed. You will work with the Board and Committee chairs to send out volunteer solicitations as well as to keep the My Volunteer Page (MVP) system up and running with current information. This can include adding new activities/events, posting announcements, running reports on volunteer hours, approving new volunteers into the system, etc. The MVP system keeps information from year to year so no need to start from scratch every year – it’s just a matter of editing.
For more information please contact Volcoord@hiteonptc.org4th Grade Math Labs in Need of Help
4th Grade math labs is in desperate need of volunteers. Without a few more volunteers, this program will not be able to continue. Math labs allows every student to work at their own level and pace, in a small group. In math labs, a volunteer works with a group of five to six students on a variety of math problems including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and word problems. Answer keys are provided to volunteers and teachers are always present to assist. 4th grade math labs is on Wednesday mornings from 8-10:30am. Please contact Mary Pat Janowski. More information can also be found here: https://hiteonptc.org/our-enrichment-programs/4th-grade-math-labs/
Box Tops for Education
Thanks to your support, so far our school has earned $756.50 from Box Top submissions this year!
Congratulations to the top 3 classes who collected the highest amount:
- Mrs. Hanson Grade 1
- Mrs. Logan Grade 2
- Mr. Bailey Grade 5
Those classes have earned a fun reward. We still have a lot of school year left and a lot of Box Tops to clip! Please continue to watch those expiration dates, expired ones will not be counted. A new school contest has started and the next 3 top classes will earn a reward and be announced in June.
Thank you for your continued support in this wonderful program that benefits our school!
Movie Night on January 25th
Popcorn Friday Coming Up!
Popcorn Friday is coming up January 18th.
Don't forget those quarters and remember there is a 2 bag limit.
A small amount of bags will still be available for after school purchase.
Dining for Dollars at Panera Bread on January 29th
Donuts with Dudes on February 7th
Come to the Hiteon gym early (7:30-8am) on Thursday, February 7th and enjoy a light breakfast with your “Dude.” We will be serving donut holes and muffins, along with fruit and a drink, before school begins. This is a great way to spend time with your child before they head off to class and also meet others in the Hiteon community.
To make this day a success, we need volunteers to help set-up, serve and clean-up. If you are interested in helping with this event, please sign-up using MyVolunteerPage. We hope to see you there!
Art Literacy
This month the selected artist the children will learn about is Paul Klee. We have a fun project the students will participate in based on what they learned about the artist. If you are interested in helping with your child's class, contact your teacher. Remember you must have a completed background check.

Volunteer Tip: Please Arrange Care for Your Little Ones
Although, we all love to see your little ones, it is Beaverton School District policy that younger than school-age children are not allowed to be in the school during regular school hours. Unfortunately, insurance does not extend to them if something were to happen. Feel free to bring your pre-school aged children to after school events. However if you are volunteering or training for an event (e.g. helping in a classroom, making photo copies, training for art lit, doing passport check, etc.) we ask that you find alternate care for them. We really appreciate all of the hours that you put in and understand that lack of child care can prevent you from being as present as you would like to be.
Lost and Found
Over the break you may have realized that your child is missing a favorite hat or warm coat. It's not too late to stop at the Hiteon Lost and Found to claim lost items! There is still a lot of winter ahead and that cozy scarf will come in handy! Be sure to stop by the Lost and Found (or ask your student to do so) before NOON on Thursday, January 31. That is when everything will be removed and donated to the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet.
Here is the link to the "Big Frog On-Line Store" for Hiteon spirit wear. It will be linked for two weeks! Order away if you'd like!
