Last Week's Intruder Drill
Each year, every Pickerington School is required by law to perform a series of drills designed to ensure our students and staff are prepared in the event of emergencies. Those tests include six fire drills, three tornado drills, and three lockdown drills.
We develop plans for these drills in cooperation with local law enforcement, fire departments, and Homeland Security. Such drills are part of every building’s emergency plan.
At the junior high school and high school levels, many of these drills are unannounced, which provides a more realistic opportunity to test our preparedness.
Each year, we train staff and students on what to do in these situations. Last Thursday, we conducted an unannounced “intruder drill” in our building. The specific time of the drill
was unannounced to students, but we did advise teachers earlier in the week that we would be performing such a lockdown exercise at some point.
During this drill, one of our local Sheriff’s Department officers walked through the hall, yelling, "There is an intruder in the building. Intruder! Intruder!" After someone notified the office, I got on the intercom and followed the intruder, using our cameras and announcing to the staff and students where the "intruder" was at in the building. This is part of the training we had provided students and staff earlier in this year. Announcing where an intruder is in the building allows classroom teachers to decide if they can get their students safely out of the building or if they are safer barricading the door and staying inside.
During this time, about half of our classrooms evacuated the building. After approximately ten minutes, the drill was over.
When the drill was completed, it became apparent that some students had taken the drill to be “real” rather than just an exercise. Some parents received concerned texts from students. That was unfortunate and certainly not our intent; I apologize to those students and parents who may have been anxious that this was an actual drill.
After each exercise like this, we assess our response to see where we can improve for the future. While we want to ensure we train our students and staff to respond in case there is an actual emergency, we certainly do not want to create undue concern that there is an actual threat when this is just a drill!
For that reason, Pickerington Schools is making a change to its procedure during future drills. All buildings will send an email message through our One-Call parent notification system about five minutes before future drills occur. We will not use our phone call notifications for this, as it is our experience that such non-emergency phone calls can create undue panic for parents.
We will be holding one additional drill this school year, and will provide parents with one of these emails. (To ensure you receive these emails, be sure to check your communication preferences for our One-Call Now system by going to http://www.pickerington.k12.oh.us/parent-portal/ and clicking on “Access My Call Now.”)
As always, the safety and security of your children is our primary focus. My door is always open and I am happy to discuss any further concerns or questions that you might have.
