Updates for Hillcrest Families - Late August 2017

Happy New Year!

I love the idea of having two "New Years"! In addition to celebrating a new beginning every January, at school we get to hit the rest button every September, too! Now is the time for setting goals and sharing our intentions for a positive start to the new school year. Our staff is excited and ready for a great start. Teachers have been in their classrooms working to prepare for everyone's first day on Friday, September 1st!

This is the last summer edition of our family newsletter. As the school year begins, please look to get a new edition via email every week. If email doesn't work for you, please let the office know and we will send a print copy home with your child.

Staff is Back!

Hillcrest teachers are back and busy learning and leading. Last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, all teachers participated in district wide professional development at West High School. These sessions provided opportunities for teachers to grow their understanding of learners and how they learn. This also provided a chance to collaborate with other teachers across the district.

On Tuesday, our building's leadership team (called SAIL) shared with the rest of the staff what they have been working on all summer. We are set up for greatness as we continue to improve how we deliver instruction to students. Here is our Theory of Action that guides all of our work:

IF: The Hillcrest Instructional Teams* use PLCs to collaborate around student data and employ highly effective responsive practices**...

THEN: All students will demonstrate higher levels of performance and engagement in literacy and mathematics.

IF teachers engage in PLC cycles (collecting and analyzing student data to plan instruction)on an ongoing basis,

IF teachers engage in learning, have opportunities to practice and are given feedback around the implementation of highly effective responsive practices**,

THEN teachers will provide highly effective responsive instruction**, including small group instruction.

I know this statement has a lot of education words that may be a mystery to most people, but we wanted to share how our commitment to your child and their learning drives everything we do!

Listening Conferences K-5

Hillcrest staff has always looked forward to listening conferences as a way to connect with families and learn about what sets each learner up for success. Please make an appointment with your child's homeroom teacher via the link below. SIgn-up Genius will send you a reminder the day before your scheduled conference. Please note, 4K does not conduct listening conferences since home visits have been carried out by Mrs. Way.
