A Dash of Salt - I Don't Want to Go!
Some other kids dread going to school. For these kids, going to school may become so stressful that they throw temper tantrums over going to school or complain of headaches, stomach aches, or chest pain. Around this time of year, we experience these types of behaviors, but the important thing is to determine why your child may be reacting this way? Listen to this week's episode for a few tricks to get to the heart of the issue and make your mornings smooth sailing.

We Could Use Your Help
Volunteer Opportunities
1) The Spencer sign - we are looking for a volunteer once (maybe twice) a month to change the message on the sign out front.
2) The Food Pantry - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically clean out and organize the Food Pantry located outside near Door #1.
3) The Free Library - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically organize the Free Library located outside near Door #1.
4) The Lost & Found - we are looking for volunteer(s) to periodically go through the Lost & Found which is located off the playground outside Door #21, and look for items that might have a name in them so we can get them back to the owner, post pictures of the items on the Spencer PTO Facebook page, and donate unclaimed items.
Please call the office if you are able to lend a hand in any one of these areas. Your help is greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU!
Wow! Our Spencer families have come out big time for our staff already! We have just over 40% of Staff Wish Lists fulfilled after just one week! Thank you! If you are willing and able to donate items, please sign up and send them in with your student(s) when you get a chance. We will be leaving this sign-up live for a while. You can view the sign-ups here. Please note: due to the large number of items/staff, I have broken the lists out into individual grade levels, Support Staff, and Specials. You should be able to view a tab for each level - on a mobile device, it may show up as a drop down menu. Thank you for continuing to show our staff that we appreciate all they do!
Sun Shades
Last year, the PTO purchased 3 new sunshades for the playground, at the cost of roughly $25,000, which was donated by our awesome families. We have noticed that one of them is rusting in a couple places already and the folks who installed them said this is likely due to students hitting the poles with water bottles, sticks, rocks, etc., which chips the rust proof paint off. We will be getting this repaired in the spring, but once again, I would like you to ask your students to be respectful of school equipment so ALL the children get to enjoy their benefits for years to come! Thank you!
Steam Night
STEAM Night is planned for our February family event, however, we will be moving this to a virtual event. If students would like to create a STEAM Project to share with their friends, please help them plan something that can be recorded to showcase their project. We will be sharing project videos online on the night of the event, similar to the Talent Show. A signup form with more information will be going home with students next week and detailed information on the Virtual Event will be posted soon.
As always, please check out our Facebook page and/or website for the most up to date information this year.

Note From the Counselor
Counselor Corner!
Happy New Year from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! We hope you had a well rested, and memory filled, time with your loved ones. For the month of January we are diving into mindfulness, yoga, and other practices that treat the mind, body, and soul. The goal of these lessons is to promote self-regulation and self-reflection in our young learners, as well as to practice a sense of peace and calm during our days.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.
More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
